Prince George, B.C. - A BC hydro spokesman says BC hydro has invested $2.4 billion dollars in capital spending since 2006 until today and that is the reason why the number of staff earning more than $75,000 dollars a year has grown from 4046 in 2006 to 7402 in 2009.
The total increases in staff (not including members of the IBEW and Office & Professional Workers) cost BC Hydro an additional $221 million dollars in 2009.
Over the past five years, the staff increase costs adds up to about $1 Billion dollars or just over 40% of the total capital works projects.
Meantime a spokesman for two of the Unions at BC Hydro (the IBEW and the Office and Professional Workers) says their wages have been frozen for two years, 2010, and 2011.
The story came to light after Opinion250 obtained from the public accounts of BC Hydro the information on the large increase in staff costs. (see previous story)
A spokesman for BC Hydro says the additional staff were needed in order to carry out the new capital works projects. These are long term jobs.
BC Hydro received an interim rate increase in March of 2010 of 6.1%. The BCUC is in the process of reviewing that application and a final decision on the increase will then be made.
BC hydro says it will face a short fall of $187 million in revenue in 2011 without the increase in Hydro costs.
