Prince George, B.C. - Shooters Sports Pub will be given support to increase its number of seats and  to extend it’s hours of operations to 2:00 a.m.
The Ospika Boulevard pub already has  98 indoor seats, and would like to add another 27 to make it 125. The plan is to use the space from the  former   liquor store onsite to create a stage and a dance floor.
The agent acting on behalf of the owner, says the pub’s unique location supports later hours. The current hours of operation are 10:00a.m. to midnite Monday Through Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday Sunday. The owner would like to change the hours  to 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
The argument is the pub is located across the street from the CN Centre and  the Exhibition Grounds which draw a large number of people into the city.  The proponents argue that the pub is not in a residential area, and Shooters will  continue to provide shuttle service.
Glen Moose Scott, the former City Councillor and current President of the Senior Lacrosse Association says he supports the call for extended hours as their tournaments are running later “If they (teams) hit that last game, they can’t go anywhere after the game.” Scott was clear to include the fact that Hoover ‘s enterprises support  Senior Lacrosse.
Also speaking in support  of the extended hours was Brian Marsh. He plays in the P.G. Rec Hockey League “Some of our games don’t finish till 12:30, so we would like to have somewhere to go after the game to have a bite to eat and reminisce about the game.”
Diane Nakamura spoke in favour of the extended hours saying people should have a choice of where they want to go and currently if you want to hear live music, you would have to go downtown. “People want to go where they feel safe.”
Council gave unanimous approval to the requested changes.

"The plan is to use the space from the former liquor store onsite to create a stage and a dance floor."

It is about time. I wish them the best. Time to bring some music and dancing for a range of age groups back into the life of this community.

I noticed staff recommended 1am. Glad to see that reason prevailed with a 2am closure. No neighbours to disturb there, so little excuse for the 1am closing time.
How about some more parking? They are already taking up the bike lanes out front. Why even have bike lanes if you are going to allow people to park in them?
Renovations were done a while ago and they look good. Funny though that it was built without approval..
what a joke good for some but not for all idiots
Good point RUEZ.

However, I think ALL parking in that area should be handled in the same way. Whenever there are events, whether soccer or CN Centre activities, a significant number of people park on the road rather than in the parking lots. Both the City and the restaurant/pub should be providing enough parking and post no parking signs along the street.
"good for some but not for all"

That's the way life works, isn't it? What's the point you are trying to make?
It would have had a building permit I would think. That is all that is required to build.

It seems to be the same with industrial buildings in this community and probably others as well. You do not need an air emission permit from the MoE to get a building permit to build a plant.

Puts those who provide those operating permits into an awkward position to say the least.
Just wanted to clarify in regards to building our expansion. We applied and received a building permit from the city of Prince George. I would like to thank all of the people that came out and supported our application to the city as well as all the positive comments that have been posted on this site.
Thank you

One would wonder why you would want to expand the hours of a pub at about the same time that the Provincial Government is bringing in legislation that will enable them to give you a breath test, and if you register over .05 you will be fined $350.00 or more. The more often you register over .05, the stiffer the fines.

Then of course if you register over .08 you are subject to higher fines, and could be charged with impaired driving.

Two drinks would probably get you over .05. One would think that with the new rules, etc; there is little or no incentive to sell liquor to customers, and therefore pubs should be looking a closing down, not expanding hours.

Why would the City support longer hours for a pub in view of the new legislation??

Of course there is always the possiblility that everone will have two drinks or less, and no one will ever blow over .05.
Jordy Hoover has a service that is quite unique. He has implemented a shuttle service at all of his establishments. So folks have a safe ride home.
Even if this service was not available what is the big deal to fork out $10, even $20 to take a cab home or call Keys Please to take you and your vehicle home. Or call a sober friend or relative. It's called taking personal responsibility. If people have money to purchase alcohol, they can pay to get a safe ride home. Cheaper than paying a $7000 lawyer bill and not having a drivers license.
If we followed Palopus line of thinking then it should be full blown prohibition. If a business wants to gamble on expanding its boundries than what is it out of your wallet? I personally think this will be a successful venture but that is simply my opinion. Others think it will fail - that is thier opinion... This town needs more evening entertainment and my wife is complaining I dont take her dancing enough. Let me put it in terms that might make Palopu happy - This will be more tax dollars for PG and you STILL dont have to leave your house to complain on the internet. Good deal for you!
Looks forward to seeing some good bands to play there.
Dont know why the implementation of the .05% alcohol content would be my thinking. I didnt implement it the Government did.

If you follow the logic of the Governments thinking they do not want anyone driving if they register over .05. This means that in effect you might as well not go to the pub. If you are going to the pub to get pickled, then by all means make other arrangements to get home.

The fact of the matter is you cannot effectively have both an .05% tolerance level and a full blown prosperous pub. Pubs make their money selling booze, and entertainment.

Anyone who thinks that people will not be driving home with over .05 is just kidding themselves. Personally I could care less if they drink or dont drink. I merely pointed out that extended drinking hours are somewhat inconsistant with the new legislation.

"I merely pointed out that extended drinking hours are somewhat inconsistant with the new legislation."

Why on earth would that be? I think it shows your bias. You seem to feel that everyone who frequents a nightclub, pub, restaurant gets blitzed, hops in the car and tries to drive home.

You also seem to think that people are going to stay longer because the opening hours are longer.

Spain, Iceland, and other countries have clubs which do not even open till midnight and stay open till 4 am or later. In Britain I understand that certain types of pubs are allowed to be open at any time of day. Does not mean they are actually open that long nor that people go there for any more than a few hours. It means that people with different lifestyles and work schedules can go at a time which is more convenient to them.

I know, freedom has to be handed out it dribs and drabs lest we act like buffoons. My view is that this is another drib ... or maybe even a drab ... or is it dram? .. :-)

Ye olde WASP roots are showing.
Going to a pub isn't just about drinking.People who dont drink also frequent pubs to eat, socialize with friends, watch sports, play pool, buckhunter or trivia. As commented by dnakamura, there is a shuttle service provided to get you home safely free of charge if you do decide to drink alcohol. Obviously pubs and bars make their money selling booze and entertainment...thats their business. Pubs and bars also employ a number of people in Prince George. What would you have these pub and bar owners do Palopu, close their doors? I for one can't wait for the live entertainment and to dust off my dancing shoes.
Free shuttle. Pick you up, let you watch live music (something that been missingvin PG for quite some time), and then shuttle me home. I know many couples that will be joining us. Party on!
