Although unwilling to provide names at this point, the Chair of the City's Heritage Commission says he's been approached by a private group with a plan that could save the building.

Jo Graber says, "They are certainly not wealthy, but they do have a considerable amount of land within the city on which they can move the building -- they've done their homework, they've already talked with a mover, the mover is ready to go next week."

Graber goes on to say, "The move is not that expensive, it's about $50,000.00, plus possibly Telus, possibly Hydro, certainly the City, so I think we have to look at that and see if the School District is amenable to that."

The Heritage Commission Chair says preliminary discussions were held with the School District, but the group was told to await the outcome of City Council's decision.  Graber had plans to meet with the anonymous individuals and formulate some kind of strategy last night.

He says the architect working on the City's 'Strategic Heritage Plan' has already indicated a building like KGV could be put on the provincial Heritage registry and would be eligible for some minor funding.  "So we have to start talking to these parties (the City and the School District) and see whether we can actually save that building, not on site, but as a (heritage) building off-site."

I don't see it as an attractive part of our heritage. It looks to me like some kind of KGB prision from a dark cold war movie.

I would hope my tax dollars don't go into this project and that the private investors can fund it all themselves. I think the city is funding to many interest projects as it is.
chadermando, you said it all. Big Big waste of money fer a giant eyesore.
Designed by the original Mayor of Prince George and not a heritage structure?
Chad: "I would hope my tax dollars don't go into this project and that the private investors can fund it all themselves."

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if they can deduct part of their donation from their income taxes, so in effect we would be helping to preserve the old ugly box after all.
Foo, it doesn't take a whole lot of designing to make a square box.
Hey Duffer! That "square box" had wood oiled floors, carved bannister rails and was a better and more solid building than many that are designed today. Don't look as it is today just a square enclosed stucco box. That is what the School District did to it. Even the windows were beautiful!
The optimum word is "was" and there is no way I want to pay any money to make it like it "was". Take some pictures of it and take the hand railings out and put them somewhere. Don't waste 4 or 5 million dollars on something that only a handful of people care about.
Okay Duffer, I give up. Would you donate a "tooney" to help us move it?
