Prince George, B.C.- City Staff will be meeting with owners and tenants on George Street this week to talk about the work schedule for the removal of the canopies.

The contract for the canopy removal has been awarded to Roger Klein and Sons for the sum of $41,216.00

The canopies were installed in 1973 and have outlived their 20 year life span.

The work to remove the canopies and to repair the facia of any buildings is expected to take about two weeks.

The removal of the canopies will mean the property owners will no longer have to pay the annual maintenance fee.

The second part of this project is to have ornamental street lighting installed however, that may not be completed until next spring as the lighting may have to be special ordered.

What about planting more trees along George street?
There is ornamental street lighting in place already. I guess they will just turf the old and install new lights. Its just tax dollars so who cares.

When will these people see that its not what the downtown looks like but a lack of reasons to shop there. George street is a mess many of the shops are empty and the sidewalks need a good cleaning . What the City needs to do is enforce the maintenance bylaw instead of leading the shop owners by the hand and doing their work for them.
Cheers
don't stop at the canopies...go right to the back alley...
They are on the Block across the Ramada.

There is well known saying. "The more vacant lots there are in a downtown, the more shoppers will come out to go shopping downtown.

If we were to get rid of all the existing retail buildings, we would have a traffic jam downtown, especially in the evenings and on the weekends.
It's funny to note that every time it rains, I will search out any overhanging protection on my way back to the office I can. So, in spite of what it looks like, I still appreciate the protection it offers in our neck of the woods.
