PG Farmers Market In Full Bloom

Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Farmers' Market has ventured into the uncharted territory of a year-round market...
May 1st marked the start of the Market's 2010 season and it opened with its usual outdoor vendors in front of Wilson Square at the courthouse, as well as an indoor portion in the former Morrison's Men's Wear Building, kitty-corner from the square, across George Street
Market President, Nancie Krushelnicki, says while Prince George is the first in the province to go year-round, another 1 or 2 are in the works, and there have been a few inquiries over the course of the summer from other communities interested in following suit.
Krushelnicki is handing out kudos to the committee that worked so hard to clean and paint and polish the old building, and "bring back its shine."
And she's giving full credit to Commonwealth Financial in helping to realize the PGFM's dream of staying open through the year. Krushelnicki says Commonwealth has agreed to rent the building this year and next, "at a very low cost."
The vendors inside the building -- mainstays at the market like P&R Farms, October Farms and Red Rooster Artisan Bakery -- committed at the start of the season to a one-year term.
When the outdoor market wraps up on the Thanksgiving weekend, a second portion of the building will open up and other long-term vendors will be given first opportunity to move inside and join them.
Krushelnicki says that second portion will purposely not have permanent stands in place, to allow the PGFM to open the space to community groups during the week for film nights and gatherings -- she says that will help the group further another goal: of using the market to create a "whole community happening."
