Yesterday's announcement that the Prince Rupert Port Authority has been granted an environmental assessment permit to start construction on a new container terminal is being hailed by Canadian National Railway.

President and CEO Hunter Harrison says he's very pleased with the approval and says he's hopeful the terminal will be operational in the third-quarter of 2007.

Harrision released CN's financial results for 2005 yesterday (click here, for full details) and says the company is starting to see profitable growth in its intermodal volumes, which were up 14-percent over 2004.

Executive Vice-President of Sales and Marketing, James Foote, says,  "Overseas volumes were up 18-percent (last year) with a lot of volume coming through both Vancouver and Halifax."  And Foote says CN plans to "turn up the volume, so to speak" on its intermodal volumes.  Train capacity from Vancouver was increased 15-percent last year.
