Cariboo Fire Centre Preps for High Winds

Williams Lake, B.C. – Just because there has been a lot of rain this week, that doesn’t mean the fire situation is over. While the recent rainfall continues to limit further growth on the fires within the Cariboo Fire Centre , there is the potential for elevated winds this afternoon with the risk of lightning. The Cariboo Fire Centre is preparing for this cold front and is taking the necessary precautions.
The break in weather has provided firefighters with the opportunity to increase guard construction and levels of containment on all fires. Currently, 1701 personnel are actively involved in suppression efforts; three-quarters of which are from BC as required.
Meldrum Complex
Meldrum Complex is currently estimated at 46,611 hectares in size. Crews did experience some increased fire behaviour yesterday on fire 191. Firefighters are continuing to secure lines on all fires within the complex. Improved visibility has also allowed full utilization of our ground and air suppression resources, which has helped reduce wildfire activity.
Bull Complex
Fire 186 is now 95% contained. Firefighters will continue to reinforce the guard by extinguishing hot spots along the southeast perimeter. Fire 234 is now in mop-up. Fire 183 is currently 5,170 hectares in size. This fire had a small escape yesterday but firefighters and helicopters were able to control the fire excursion. Crews will con-tinue to patrol this fire and extinguish hotspots. As of today, the 7000 road is open to the public.
Pelican Complex
Crews are continuing to make good progress and have increased containment on fires 205 and 299. Fire 205 is currently 43,112 hectares and is 30 per cent contained. Fire 299 is 2,290 hectares and is 20 per cent contained. Firefighters are continuing to construct guard on the east flank of fire 205. Crews will also be extinguishing hot spots around the perimeter where required. There is an area road restriction order in place from Pelican Lake to Pantage Lake in effect until September 3, 2010 or until lifted. This road restriction is to allow for the safety of the general public and our suppression resources.
Heckman Pass Fire
The fire has been mapped at 3,086 hectares. Fire crews are continuing to mop-up this fire. Friday, August 27,will be the last day with full resources on this fire then an Initial Commander and 10 fire fighters will continue patrol-ling the area.
Corkscrew Basin
This fire is burning within and outside of the Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park and is estimated in excess of 6034 hec-tares. This fire is currently being monitored by the Incident Management Team working on the Heckman Pass fire, while a Fire Analysis Plan is being completed by fire management specialists in conjunction with BC Parks Land Managers.
