Kitwanga, B.C. – RCMP are investigating after a fiery fatal crash along a winding stretch of Highway 16 early this morning.

Police and emergency crews were called out to an area just outside the small community of Gitsegukla after a single vehicle left the highway and hit the ditch.

North District RCMP say the vehicle burst into flames, killing one of the two occupants. The other person in the car managed to escape the burning wreckage and was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

Highway 16 was closed for several hours between Kitwanga and Gitsegukla while investigators looked over the scene, but it re-opened to single lane alternating traffic shortly before 9 a.m. this morning.

Police are looking at the possibility that alcohol may have been involved in the crash.

No names or hometowns have been released.

"Police are looking at the possibility that alcohol may have been involved in the crash."

Do they ever not do that?
Saw a picture of the wreck. The passenger compartment looks intact so I wonder if seatbelts where not worn.
