Terrace, B.C.- A South Hazelton Woman has been identified as the victim of a fiery single vehicle crash early this morning east of Kitwanga on Highway 16.
42 year-old Rubyann Marie Campbell died of injuries she suffered when the 2007 Ford she was in lost control and left the highway at approximately 1:20 am. RCMP says the car rolled and spun several times before it landed on the west-bound shoulder of the road and burst into flames.
The 44-year-old man in the vehicle with Campbell managed to pull her out of the flaming wreckage, but she didn’t survive. The man was taken to Wrinch Memorial Hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries before being released.
An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene to try to determine what caused the crash. The vehicle will be inspected to make sure there were no mechanical defects that may have contributed to the crash.
Investigators say alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash, but it is not clear who was driving at the time the car left the highway.
The Terrace Regional Provincial Traffic Services Unit, New Hazelton RCMP, and the BC Coroners Service are still investigating. Anyone that may have seen the crash or the vehicle before the incident is asked to contact the New Hazelton RCMP.
