Ft. St. John,- The Province has selected Shelter Industries Inc. of Aldergrove to work with the Ministry of Education to build the new modular classrooms for full-day kindergarten.

The move to all day kindergarten will see some space at the Enerplex used for classrooms, but the Peace River North region is on line for 2 of the new modulars at two separate sites.

The new modular classrooms will be designed to meet sustainable construction standards. These classrooms will incorporate energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and will be built with high-performance building envelopes to minimize operating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Full-day kindergarten is being implemented in two phases, with more than half of the province's youngest learners entering full-day kindergarten this year, and full-day kindergarten available to an estimated 40,000 learners by 2011.

Great! Sustainability and more green.
I hope the design considers zero step enty on all buildings. Which means no stairs and no ramps.
Wow! What great news! I am forgetting about the HST lies, the BCR lies and the carbon taxes already.
1. "sustainable construction standards"
Exactly what does that mean? They will be around for longer than the Roman aqueducts? Or that they will sustain the construction industry forever with repairs and replacements? Hopefully they will have metal roofing rather than some bitumen based roofing, otherwise they are neither sustainable nor green.

2. "...will be built with high-performance building envelopes to minimize operating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions"
Who cares about greenhouse gas emissions. Off-gassing of VOCs is the big thing with factory built modular buildings, isn't it? VERY high formaldehyde readings because of the lack of air circulation when all that particle board chit is used in the interior finishing. Then there is the question of the mold when the envelope is pierced so that moisture gets in but cannot escape fast enough, and mold starts to build in the wood components.

What are the bets - 10 years before the first air quality issues start showing up in the northern application of these units?

Sustainable my foot!!!!!

Notice nothing about a "healthy" environment mentioned. We care more about mother earth than her children.

Good point about access, CabinFeverGirl. Agree 100%. I would be surprised if it was considered in the first place. But, if it was, likely rejected.

Nice way to start off in school .... "modular" classroom .... aka "ATCO trailer"
the news release:
http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2009-2013/2010EDUC0100-001019.htm

So some schools will get the "modulars", "portables", "trailers" or whatevers. and others will receive actual building additions.

Wonder if there are any kids that age group in Dunster or other locations that have seen school closures.

If remote full-day kindergarten children can be transported to larger central communities, maybe urban children can be transported to school buildings which are underutilized.

I would like to see the local plan of how these additional children will be accommodated in an otherwise shrinking school population. What are the expected numbers over the first five years of operation?
1) Close schools because of declining enrollment.
2) ??
3) Build portables to accommodate unexpected bulge from full time Kindergarten in remaining schools.
