Recall Decisions Soon

Prince George, B.C. – Former BC Premier Bill Vander Zalm says in the wake of the HST petition initiative, decisions will be made in the next couple of weeks on which areas will be the first to face a recall campaign.
He says he hopes to start with maybe two or three, then follow it up with a recall every month after that until the Government responds. It would only take six recall efforts to force a change in government unless the six unseated were re-elected.
Speaking on the Meisner program on CFISFM this morning, VanderZalm says he, and other previous Premiers of BC had been approached by the Federal Government to Harmonize the Sales Tax. “I was told at the time the same information that was presented to Finance Minister Colin Hansen and that is, it will hurt the little people, that it won’t do anything for small business.”
He says he doesn’t think Premier Gordon Campbell’s political career can survive the outfall of the HST. “Gordon could have easily overcome all of this and come out immediately and said, if that’s what the people want, I will do it, he would have come out a hero.”
Vander Zalm maintains it’s a bad tax, that will drive an underground economy. He says in Greece, the underground economy is said to be 75% of all business and he is concerned the HST is a step towards a global tax.
While the Select Standing Committee is to meet this week to talk about the next steps, VanderZalm says if the Province decides to go to a referendum that will be a simple majority vote, he would be satisfied with the outcome, but an “initiative vote” calls for 50% plus, of 50% of all registered voters and even with that, the legislature will have the final say.
