Ice on Naver Creek in Hixon one year ago today

It was one year ago that a local state of emergency was declared in the community of Hixon, as ice on the Naver Creek threatened flooding.

This evening, Hixon residents are being invited to a town hall meeting at the local Community Centre hosted by the Fraser-Fort George Regional District and the Fraser Basin Council.

FFGRD Environmental Services General Manager Jim Martin says the meeting will be an information-sharing session. Martin says two consultants have completed a report looking at what may have contributed the the ice jam and what can be done to mitigate and enhance Naver Creek to lessen problems in the future.

He says the recommendations look at things like, "armouring some of the banks, bio-engineering -- so, re-vegetating some of the areas within it -- to stabilize the creek area." Martin says the consultants are looking forward to any insights area residents can provide.

Martin says after the public consultation, the report will be finalized and an action plan will be developed on mitigation. He says the consultants will then be looking into what kind of funding bodies may be able to assist with the mitigation work.
