Terrace, B.C. – The company behind B.C.’s first biocoal production facility plans to break ground on the project in later this month.
Global Bio-Coal Energy Inc of Vancouver has partnered with Coast Tsimshian Resources to construct the production plant at the site of CTR’s Porier Sort Yard in Terrace. The mill will take wood waste and convert it into a coal-like product for export to European energy markets.
“Our Company is extremely pleased to announce that we have reached a significant agreement with Coast Tsimshian Resources LP, which brings certainty of local management expertise to the project,” said Global Bio-Coal Chairman John Bennett.
The facility will create about 70 new jobs in the Terrace area.
In participating in the announcement, Garry Reece, Chair of the Board of Coast Tsimshian Resources LP stated, “Our company and management team have worked long to bring this forward with Global Bio-Coal Energy, and we are extremely pleased to be part of this exciting new project for Terrace and the Region. Coast Tsimshian Resources takes its responsibility in the area and Region very seriously, and wants this project to be as inclusive as possible. As a result, our management team will be working over the next while with a number of the forest tenure holders in the area to plan for mutually beneficial supply agreements.”
Canadian Bio-Coal says total production will amount to about 120,000 tonnes a year and has already been pre-sold to an international broker. The company says the potential for more entries into the sector is very good with the province able to produce 10 million tonnes per year from wood waste and beetle kill.
A ground-breaking ceremony is set for September 24th in Terrace at the sort yard on Keith Avenue starting at 4 p.m.
