Prince George, B.C.- New sanctions are now in effect for drinking and driving in B.C. and while many of us may think we know “our limit” do we really?
The Meisner program on CFISFM conducted an experiment this morning live on the air. Over the course of an hour and a half, Ben Meisner, the show’s host, and J.D. Boutillier the producer of the program, consumed about the same amount of booze as one would have over an extended business lunch. ( click here for a video of the event)
RCMP North District Sergeant Pat McTiernan, and Prince George Detachment Sergeant Al Steinhaueser were on hand to monitor, discuss, and administer the breathalyser testing.
Ben was drinking vodka, J.D. had beer. In each case, Ben’s drink was a single shot of Vodka with 4 oz’s of orange juice. J.D. had a can of Coors Light beer.
8:30. Ben and J.D. each had one drink.
8:40: Just ten minutes after having their first drink, the first breathalyser was administered by Sergeant Pat McTiernan of the RCMP.
· Ben’s reading was .004
· J.D.’s reading was .013
8:45: Ben and J.D. have their second drink.
9:05: Second breathalyser was administered,
· Ben’s reading was .006
· J.D.’s reading was .019 J.D. is noticeably giddy
9:15: Both men have their third drink.
9:30: Third breathalyser is administered:
· Ben’s reading is .013 Ben’s face is flushed, although well within legal limits, he says he knows his ability to drive is impaired.
· J.D.’s reading is .037 J.D. says he feels “fuzzy”
9:35 both men have their 4th drink
9:45 Fourth breathalyser is administered
· Ben’s reading is .020
· J.D.’s reading is “WARN” which means if he was behind the wheel of a vehicle, he would have had his vehicle impounded for 3, 7 or 30 days depending on his past record
Another ten minutes passes without a further drink. Both men undergo a final breathalyser:
· Ben’s reading: holds at .020 Sergeant Steinhaueser says he has noticed that while Ben has been writing notes, the notes are become less legible.
· J.D.’s reading is still “WARN” J.D. has trouble providing a deep enough breath and feels dizzy afterwards, surprisingly, J.D. says he feels “better” now, and says in different circumstances, he would have waited 10 minutes before driving home “and that is horrifying” says J.D.
Sergeant McTiernan says J.D.’s current condition is the real danger zone. “This is not the sleepy fall over drunk, this is the person who is feeling a certain level of confidence, and will take a chance. This is the person we want to make sure we take off the road because they will speed, they will cut someone off, they will think they can out run the police, they will run a stop sign and T-bone someone.”
McTiernan says if a passenger plane crashed in the city killing 58 people society would be in shock and outraged, yet, society seems to accept that it’s o.k. for 58 people to have died in crashes on the highway in North District last year. “That is not o.k., and that is what this ( the new sanctions) is all about, trying to reduce those crashes, and trying to keep those people off the road who could cause harm to you or the ones you love.”
