Prince George, B.C.- A delegation from the City of Prince George is among the municipal government reps from communities throughout the Province to attend the Union of B.C. Municipalities Convention which gets underway today in Whistler.
Building on the success of the Olympics, the convention theme is “Forging Gold Medal Standards”.
Formed in 1905 to provide a common voice for local government, the UBCM represents 190 members. The annual convention provides a platform for local government leaders from across the province to come together, learn, grow and take a united policy decision on important issues facing their communities.
There are more than 160 resolutions this year although none come from Prince George. Some of the resolutions will be voted on as a block, some will be debated individually. The issues cover everything from requesting more provincial funding for everything from ambulance service to school districts, libraries to legal aid in addition to calling on the Province to increase the deposits on beverage containers to encourage recycling.
This year, more than 1,500 delegates will participate in workshops and forums while setting policy direction for UBCM to follow in the year ahead.
Highlighting the conference will be addresses by Premier Gordon Campbell and NDP Leader Carole James.
UBCM President Harry Nyce (Nisga’a Hereditary Chieftain and Kitimat-Stikine Regional District Chair) will preside over the Convention as his one-year term comes to an end.

1. Whistler, eh?
2. No resolutions from the center of the province. We have no problems here? Or we have problems, but no solutions?
