Prince George, B.C. – UNBC students raised a record breaking $19052.49 during their 2010 Shinerama Campaign for Cystic Fibrosis.

Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary school fundraiser, involving student volunteers from more than 65 universities and colleges. The campaign, which began in 1964, has raised almost $18.0 million to help fund CF research and treatment programs.

“We are so proud of the Prince George community for helping us reach our goal,” said UNBC Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS) Vice President Social and Shinerama Co-Chair, Morgan Melnyk and NUGSS VP External and Shinerama Co-Chair Alex Wallace. “Without the amazing support of the community, we would not have been able to reach and surpass our record breaking goal! We are also very proud of UNBC students this year, as we saw a record turnout of nearly 350 of the students who donated their time, energy and effort on Shine Day to help raise money for this great cause.”

Shinerama also fosters healthy competition between UNBC clubs, which compete to raise money for the ‘top spot.’ The top spot saw the return of the UNBC Greywolves Hockey raising over $1600.00. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th spots all raised over $1000 as well.

When Shinerama began just over four decades ago, most children with CF did not live long enough to attend kindergarten. Today, half of all Canadians with CF may expect to live to age 37, and beyond.
