Give The Gang Unit Time To Show Their Stuff

The very first thing that you don’t do, regardless of how you really feel, is say that you're happy with the result.

That was the case in the Maclean’s recent story placing Prince George as Canada’s number 1 dangerous city in the country.

Police spokesperson Const Lesley Smith, took the time on Wednesday to suggest that the information is a good new story in that it shows just what the police agencies have been doing in this city to combat crime. As one poster recently wrote on the story, she would do well in politics with that kind of line.

Of course we have a gang problem, gangs look at where the best business opportunities are and Prince George, with a better than average salary, with generally a blue collar working force and a tendency to be called a tad red neck, fits right in with the place to set up business and the gangs have.

Better to call a spade a shovel rather than try and portray it as a bat.

Mayor Dan took to the media conference to talk about what the real problem is in this city, poverty. He says the  poor and disadvantaged are  being preyed upon by gangs.

We are a catchment area, we are a cesspool for every small community around us, not unlike Vancouver is the catchment area for the rest of the province.

We have only begun to specialize in the fighting of gangs in our area, with a special task force.

Before we try to behead them, how about giving them a chance to show their stuff?

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion

I think what constable Smith was trying to get at was. (At first i thought it was a spin but if you use your grey matter up stairs here is the logical rationale of why she said what she said..)

Gang/Crime problem = serious problem there a no doubts about this.

#1 Crime raking in a prestigous publication.. This in fact maybe good news because it could be a political trigger to get something done.. We could be ranked quite lower on the list and not get the attention to attract resources to get this problem solved.
If we are number 1 and Victoria is number 2, aren't we in pretty good comapny? I mean, Victoria is the traditional retirement capital of Canada, the envy of this wonderful nation, and we beat her.
Victoria, Kelowna and Surrey are also in the top ten - these are all major Hells Angels strongholds. But there is no connection between the gangs and the crime rate is there? Surely its just a coincidence? lol
Prince George in a transient community, always has been. The gateway to the north and west, it has always been the hub which people travel through. Some of the drugs stop here, the rest goes on to Terrace Rupert Chetwynd etc. And so do the gangs, they spread out or enforce their territory in outlying areas.
Its always been a place the loggers, miners, other workers all come to.
I'm not surprised by the rating in the least, and no matter what the police do, its not going to get totally stamped out, but I bet they give a damn good effort.
My hats off to them, but the citizens in this town have gotta understand, gangs are here because your friends, neighbours, relatives, use what they sell. Unless we start calling in drug houses and gang activity, we've only ourselves to blame.
Hmmm... four of the top ten are in BC. Seems it is pretty easy to be a criminal in BC. Maybe, just maybe, we should look at how easy it is to serve time in BC compared to the rest of Canada. Cable TV, three decent meals a day, free health and dental... Dan is right we do have a problem with poverty, we treat our convicts better than we treat our law abiding citizens. Something is wrong with that.
The book "McMafia" implies if you have some bucks and want to get into organized crime BC is right behind Columbia. Looking into the Vasi-Birk trial, and the fact that the HA's in BC are the most profitable bikers in the world leads me to think the corruption goes right to the top.
HEY PORTER...you ever been to jail? cause the meal are far from decent unless your a starving crackhead.cable tv? hmm ya for the 1 hour a day when you're in the tv room..isnt health care free in canada for everyone? and sorry sir there is no dental plan there either..so keep posting bad information
Thanks Slim - "the citizens in this town have gotta understand, gangs are here because your friends, neighbours, relatives, use what they sell."
Thats what I keep saying but the self admitted dope smokers on here just rant that it should be legalized. These are two different arguements - if you want it legalized than get into politics and do your best to change that. As it stands it is illegal and when you smoke you are feeding the gangs and crime - SIMPLE.
Oh for Christ sake, quit sugar coating it. PRINCE GEORGE is a horrible place for crime and violence!! END OF STORY
JamesToney, I guess the prison guards and medical staff don't know what they are talking about. Thank you for correcting me. And as for the food quality, three meals a day is more than a lot of kids get in this city so sorry if I don't feel bad for them. Also a few years ago the inmates went on a hunger strike, because there were no pizza pops in the commissary, they got their pizza pops.
Interceptor. What is the reason that weed is illegal and alcohol is?
legal.
The value added in the production of liquor is higher than in the production of marijuana.

If it were legalized, maybe the wineries could open up a secondary business around marijuana, have smoking rooms, field and production tours, glossy magazines, decorative containers, etc.

Just think of the HST income alone! :-)
Re: upcoming gang information summit. This should be an event that is open to the public for free! The 55 dollar door charge is a money grab. Why pay for Inspector virk, rcmp, government reps when they are already being paid by their respective organizations. This is a work related function people. I would insist that it be gratis for the people of PG to attend.

To think of paying an ex gang member at this event for his views from the proceeds of the door is reprehensible. This person once made his living on the blood and tears of the community wherever they lived, and now we pay them again. No thanks.

You can get all the information you need about gangs off the internet, along with programs that have been used to disrupt them.

Yes the homegrown gangs are violent but watch out....the MS-13 is slowly making headway into canada. They make the GTS look like kindergarden.

CBSA is already on the lookout for these gangs and actively deporting them back to central america but its a case of just the tip of the iceberg. They cant get them all.

If this gang summit does not touch on this aspect of gangs coming into the country, you will not appreciate the real danger gangs pose to communities.
I do not know what all the fuss is about. To quote a famous person previously in charge of the City RCMP:

"When it comes serious crimes, Prince George stands up well in comparison with other Canadian cities.

"The last time we had any major gang activity in Prince George was in 2004.If you look at our homicide ranking, we're actually at the bottom". - March 2008

Ha ha gus, more like infamous. Now transferred to some insignificant corner office in headquarters until retirement.
