Tourism Ministers See China As Key

Prince George, B.C. -  As Canada's federal, provincial, and territorial tourism ministers wrapped up their second meeting in as many years in Vancouver yesterday, the significance of the Chinese market was highlighted.

The Canadian tourism economy provides revenues of nearly $70-billion dollars and jobs for more than 600-thousand Canadians across the country.

During the Vancouver gathering to re-commit efforts to grow international tourism to our country, the ministers paid particular attention to the tremendous opportunity for growth as a result of the granting of Approved Designation Status by China.

ADS opens the door to Chinese tour groups to visit Canada and to direct marketing to Chinese travellers.  The Prince George Airport was announced as Air China's alternate airport at the 2010 Winter Olympics back in February, sparking local excitement about the possibilities of enticing travellers to our region.

Having recently welcomed the inaugural Chinese tour groups to Canada, Federal Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism, Rob Moore, is leading a delegation to Shanghai and Beijing next week to continue to strengthen bilateral relations.
