Bella Coola, B.C. – There is some good news for residents of the flood-weary Bella Coola Valley.
The BC River Forecast Centre has ended a flood warning for the Bella Coola River main stem and downgraded the flood warning to a high streamflow advisory for the river’s Tributaries.
The recent rainfall that forced the evacuation of at least a dozen homes and caused the Central Coast Regional District to once again declare a local state of emergency is now tracking to the north. Environment Canada expects that Bella Coola won’t see any more significant rainfall for at least a week.
The frontal system that brought wet weather back to the region after the torrential downpour nearly three weeks ago dropped up to 97 mm of rain at the MOT road weather station at Bella Coola over a 48 hour period.
Officials with the River Forecast Centre say the Bella Coola River measured at the Nuxalk First Nation Reserve peaked shortly before midnight last night and is receding today. Local reports from the upper valley indicate that portions of the river reached bankfull last night. However, no flooding was observed. The Salloomt River which flows into the Bella Coola from the north side of the valley peaked yesterday afternoon and has also continued to recede. Other tributaries of the Bella Coola River are also receding.
Rivers and streams are expected to continue receding depending on the rainfall. The River Forecast Centre says it will provide further updates tomorrow or earlier if necessary.
