Prince George, B.C. - The trial of Councillor Brian Skakun has been adjourned until December 7th.
Although it was to continue today, Judge Kenneth Ball is ill, and had another judge offer his apologies to the court.
The case is now adjourned until December 7th.
Outside the courthouse, Defense Lawyer John Duncan said while his client would have liked to have worked through today to deal with some issues, given the pace the trial has been going at, he is not certain the trial can be completed this year. “While I don’t want to say anything about the testimony witnesses may give, we have lost a day and certainly some of the witnesses yet to testify will take some time”.
Duncan says he and Crown have been working on paring back the witness list which started at 18 and he believes it is now down to 10.
Skakun is charged with breaching the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act in connection with the leaking of the Heller report to the CBC. The report dealt with personnel matters arising from conflict within the RCMP detachment in Prince George. While it said complaints against one manager were unfounded, it also suggested there was a perceived conflict of interest because of the manager’s romantic relationship with the Officer in charge of the detachment.
