Time to Fall Back One Hour

Prince George, B.C.- Don’t forget to turn the clocks back one hour before you hit the sack tonight. The official change to standard time takes place at 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
The time change happens at a time when the daylight hours are shorter and that means less sunlight and reduced exposure to naturally occuring Vitamin D.
“Changing our clocks is an excellent time to consider taking a daily Vitamin D supplement”, says Kerensa Medhurst, Health Promotion Coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society Northern Region.
In consultation with their healthcare providers, the Canadian Cancer Society recommends;
- Adults living in Canada should consider taking Vitamin D supplementation of 1,000 international units (IU) a day during the fall and winter.
- Adults at higher risk of having lower Vitamin D levels should consider taking a Vitamin D supplement of 1,000 IU a day all year round. This includes people:
o 50 years of age and older;
o with dark skin;
o who don’t go outside often, and;
o who wear clothing that covers most of their skin.
In addition to taking supplements, people can get Vitamin D by limited exposure to sunlight – during the spring and summer in Canada – and through their diets.
The Cancer Society says turning to tanning beds to try and get “sunlight” is not a safe alternative.
Tanning beds and sun lamps, like the sun, release ultraviolet (UV) rays; they can cause skin cancer and are not a safe alternative to meeting Vitamin D needs.
