Prince George, B.C.- Premier Gordon Campbell says while it is foolish to govern based on opinion polls , he did feel the pressure of the recent rankings which gave him a 9% approval rating. “You would have to be pretty deep underground not to know that the polls have not been my friend over the past little while” Campbell told a gathering with media reps this morning. “It seemed to me this week the time had come to step aside. I think it is going to be an exciting time for the Party and I’m looking forward to the leadership campaign.”
He says his plans now, are to make a smooth and comprehensive transition as the Province and the Liberal Party go through a leadership race. “ There will be a new leader elected of the Party, there will be a new Premier of the Province and then I’ll sit as an MLA and beyond that, you know, I want to see some of those folks that I’ve been missing a lot.”
He doesn’t abide by the idea that he step down now, have an interim Premier appointed, then an election in May of 2013 “A smooth transition doesn’t mean you have a new leader every 2 or three months, it mean you have a smooth and orderly transition, so I’ll be Premier until the party selects a new leader. The new leader will then be sworn in as Premier, and that will make for a smooth and orderly transition.”
He says he watched the comments and commentary which followed his public address of last week and while in Los Angeles with his son and grandson started thinking about the time he has missed with his family “There is a lot of time you take away from people when you do this job and it’s important not just for me and my family, but its important for the Province, that we get back to what’s critically important for people.”
Politics in B.C. can be nasty, and Campbell hopes that will not discourage qualified people from stepping forward “When you get into politics you take the good and you take the bad, so people will say what they want about people who are in public life, the challenge is when things that are said about me are visited on my nephews, my nieces, my sons as they were growing up , that is not good for public life. We should all know that in Canada, public life is a huge gift that we’ve been given. It’s important for people to be willing to serve, I think that we all have to raise our game.”
He says when people opt not to enter government because of the commentary that takes place “We all lose.”
Campbell says the biggest decision of his political career was not yesterday’s announcement that he was stepping aside, he says the biggest decision of his career was to run in the first place. Having said that, he adds, there was a different mood in his household last night. “There is a sense of relief, there’s a sense of we’ve got things we still need to do, you know, there’s a whole new world that’s opening up, sometimes I don’t think people understand how much time and energy it takes to do a job like this, so yea, I was relieved, Nicholas was there, my grandson was there, we had a great night, it was fun.”
As for the immediate future, he presents a positive outlook “I think it will be a very exciting time for everybody and we will be able to build on the foundations of what we created in British Columbia number one, but number two, we’ll get back to focussing on what’s important to British Columbians.”

1. Brought in the HST without any discussion with his Cabinet, or MLA's
2. Brought in the Carbon Tax
3. Shuffled his Cabinet and changed the duties of the various Ministries without any discussion with his Cabinet, or MLA's. Basically told them that this is the way it is.
4. Advised the General Public that he would abide by the results of a referendum on the HST in Sept 2011 making it binding on the Government without any discussion with his Cabinet, or MLA's
5. Brought in the so called 15% reduction in income tax, again without discussion with his Cabinet or MLA's
It goes on and on. This is a one man show from the get go, and this guy is an ego maniac.
I doubt if he had any discussion with his Cabinet or MLA's when he went on TV to try and convince us he was doing a good job and he blew $240,000.00 of tax payers money.
It also appears that his announced resignation was a complete surprise to everyone in Government. Again no discussion.
By announing his resignation publically he has basically set the agenda for his leaving, as opposed to how he would leave if the Party kicked him out. So we now have a situation where he resigned, but will not step down until after a Convention elects a new leader. They have 6 months to hold a convention, and that would probablly be the earliest we could expect this dude to leave.
BUT WAIT. He is not leaving. After they elect a new leader he plans to sit in the Legislature as a MLA. This of course means he continues to make big bucks, and probably not make any contribution to the party, or Government. Would the New Leader ask his advice??.
Who knows maybe he will let his name stand for the Leader of the Party at the Convention. This guy is so befuddled nothing would surprise me.
BOTTOM LINE. The HST recalls must go forward with a fervor. Whether Campbell goes or stays is irrelevant. What matters is the HST must be cancelled. This is what the people want, and the Government better get off its ass and deliver or suffer a major defeat in the next election. Or better still suffer a major defeat because of recalls.
All this smoke and mirrors is designed to put us to sleep so that they can continue on with their agenda which is to give huge tax breaks to business and corporations on the backs of consumers.
Dont fall for all the BS.
