Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George, The Regional District of Fraser Fort George and the Lheidli T’enneh are expected to sign a partnership agreement this morning aimed at expanding the City’s community forest license to a 25 year tenure.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Prince George City Council approved moving forward to extend the community forest license not only in terms of time, but also in terms of boundaries.
There are about 38 thousand hectares of forested Crown lands in the region which are in need of forest fire fuel treatment. To leave them unattended increases the risk of interface fires for Crown lands within City limits, and for areas within the Regional District and surrounding the Shelley Reserve of the Lheildi T’enneh.
It is believed revenue from the removal of some timber will pay for the cost of the operations.
Currently Prince George has a five year community forest license, but that will expire in October of next year if there is no application to extend it to a 25 year license.
The three party application is expected to carry extra weight with the Province which has the final say on the request.
