Prince George, B.C. – Thirty five extra shelter spaces are now available in Prince George. That brings the number of homeless shelter beds to 116 to get through the winter.

The numbers do not include the transitional beds at AWAC or Ketso Yoh.

Normally, the province would provide funding for the extra beds only when there is an “extreme weather alert”, but in Prince George that alert is sounded on the first of November, and it remains in effect usually until late March.

Malachy Tohill the Regional Manager for B.C. Housing, says the situation here is not like the lower mainland where a snowfall today could be gone within a week. Once the cold weather sets in and the snow is on the ground, opportunities for people to find shelter outdoors is greatly reduced . “We don’t want to leave anyone out in the cold.”

The extra beds have been allotted to the following,

* Bridget Moran Shelter, 10 spaces
* AWAC Women's Shelter, 10 spaces
* Ketso Yoh Men's Shelter: 160 Quebec St., 15 spaces

Prince George has 81 year-round shelter beds.
