Prince George-Peace River  M-P Jay Hill, has been appointed Chief Government Whip by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Hill says he is honoured the Prime Minister chose him to address the unique challenges faced by the government whip in a minority parliament. “Caucus cohesiveness is critical to the future success of this Conservative minority government.  The responsibilities are not new to Hill. “Having served as chief whip for my party on three previous occasions, I know our government will be counting upon my experience to provide the right combination of flexibility, discipline and support for our entire caucus.”

In a statement earlier today, the Prime Minister said, “I am very pleased to make this announcement and to confer these important responsibilities on such a capable and respected Parliamentarian. In a minority Parliament the role of Whip is crucial, and everyone’s talent and hard work will be critical in helping us fulfill the mandate Canadians have given us.”

To better enable him to carry out his duties, Hill will also be sworn in as a Privy Councillor.

This is great news. Congradulations Jay Hill. IMO you earned it and deserve the position as much as anyone.

I was hoping Jay Hill would get the Defence or Agriculture portfolio, but whip is just as good if not better for his riding because now he will be at the center of all the horse trading that takes place to bring in new legislation.

I have to admit my faith in Harper has been shaken the last few days with his appointment of a Senator and un-elected cabinet post as well as a liberal going straight to cabenit, while passing up on Jay Hill for cabinet. Lets hope Harper doesn't make anymore of these awful decissions that go against the prinicples he sold to the electorate.

Time Will Tell
Harper is in power .... he will do waht he thinks is best for the country ...

whether he did the right thing will be decided at the next election ....

in the meantime there is nothing an individual can do to influence the situation ....

the Kingsway Rding Association has asked for Emerson to refund the $90 some thousand dollars the Association gave him to get elected as a Liberal.

We may see a legal battle here if he does not return the money .....

the matter is not over yet and will haunt Harper for some time, I suspect ... no one is worth that much ....

Stronach got re-elected as a Liberal in her riding ... there is no way emerson would ever enjoy the same support ....

this move showed that emerson is not as astute a politician as people make him out to be ....

so ... is that because he was a Liberal ... or is that because he is a Conservative .....
