Prince George, B.C. - Liberal Leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon says the HST is good for northern B.C..
Speaking on the Meisner program on CFISFM this morning, Falcon says  in terms of forestry, the HST pulls  $140 million dollars out of forestry costs. He says he is in favour of lowering the HST by 1%, and a further 1% when it is financially viable to do so. However, he does support the idea of pushing up the referendum “My goal is right now, to make sure we don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Living in the lower mainland, going back to the PST is not going to make much of a difference, but it will have an impact in the north.”
Falcon also says it is time to get on with the building of the Wood Innovation and Design Centre. “It is something we need to get on with. I believe there is an opportunity to twin an engineering education program that could tie into the wood innovation centre, perhaps  to use some of the space to help make the project viable and have sufficient revenues generated. “
As for where that centre should  be built, he is not shying away from where it should be located. “If my memory serves me correct, Minister Bond’s ministry is the one that is going to be overseeing the decision as to which location that centre should go.”
Falcon is aware his long time friend Dan McLaren is part of a group that has amassed property that could be used for this centre “Certainly I’ve known Dan for almost 30 years, and he’s been a friend and supporter of mine for 30 years. I don’t walk away from that at all. I’m not the kind of person that does, just because someone has been a friend of mine for 30 years . I can tell you, the decision as to where the wood innovation and design centre  goes, will be made through a process of looking at alternative locations and making recommendations on where the best deal makes sense for the wood innovation centre and hopefully for the City of Prince George.”
Falcon adds, “Just because someone has been a friend and supporter of mine, does not disqualify him for being able to go after whatever opportunities   may be out there. If that is going to be the price of friendship   I can tell you, we won’t have too many friends in public life for too long.   All that Dan McLaren needs, and anyone else needs, is to know that there’s going to be a  fair open process   in which they have an opportunity, if they’re in that business, to have access to a project location.”
Falcon says while he would like to see the centre built in the downtown core the time has come to “get on with it. Wherever it’s built is fine with me.”
Falcon says he attended at least one meeting in Victoria with Dan McLaren “I know Dan McLaren came to Victoria, I know he was meeting with a number of ministers promoting the project ( a new Downtown)  I know I sat in on one meeting briefly, I don’t recall, I don’t believe the subject of tax breaks came up, to be honest with  you,  I don’t totally remember.”
When it comes to BC Rail, Falcon said it was not easy for his government to change it’s position on that railway and agree to sell it ( long term lease) but he believes  selling/leasing  BCRail was the right thing to do. He says  CN has the reach in the terms of relationships and contacts that will make the Asia Pacific gateway a viable economic driver.
“Government is not particularly adept at running businesses, we tend to get our clocks cleaned by the private sector  who spend every waking moment on how to run things more efficiently.”
Does that mean the government should be out of the business of running B.C. Hydro? Falcon says no, “B.C. Hydro is an important asset there’s no question about it, and I think we’ve made a decision  that we think it is the public interest that we maintain B.C. Hydro as a publicly owned utility. Yes, there will be some trade offs, there’s probably not going to be the height of efficiency, but we try to bring in some good people put a very solid board of directors in place and I think they have done a pretty credible job of operating B.C. Hydro in the public’s interest to the public benefit, and I think that’s a good thing.”

It really doesn't matter what Mr. Falcon says as he won't be around anyways
He is just another Campbell crony. What comes out of his mouth is nothing but MORE BC Liberal lies. We have had enough. BC cannot afford another term of such cronyism.
What's good for business is the only issue on the adgenda for the BC Liberals. Sell our assets, cover up the BC Rail scandal, stand behind a leader who lied to get elected, close schools, underfund health care, increase taxes on the middle class while giving more breaks to business, user fees on all government services our taxes used to fund, allow BC Hydro assets to deteriorate for years and now they'll raise the money from the taxpayers with 30% increases while paying shareholders and executives large returns.

Can't you just see Falcon as Health Minister on TV, telling the people they are wrong - BC's hospitals are getting more funding then ever - while we wait in ER for hours, wait years for surgery, while doctors, nurses and hospital staff raise the alarm about the deteriorating healthcare system, we watch him contract out cleanning and food services to his cronies and all is good hey Falcon?
Thank God James resigned today and there is a 3rd party starting up so that we may have an actual choice in the next election instead of holding our noses and choosing who stinks the least!
hmmm, this guy should really read what he just said! that was bc best assets
Still a Campbell puppet!!!
and in my opinion an idjit

Cambell is still in th ebackground pulling the strings.... has he really resigned...not yet!!!!!!

I agree 101% with you anniemartin

People really need to listen to what Kevin Falcon is saying.
Listen very closely and read between the lines, because Falcon is telling us what kind of a Premier and a leader he would be.
He would be another Gordon Campell...only meaner...much meaner.
Campell always tried to come off as a good guy who cared about the people of B.C.
He was as phoney as a 3 dollar bill and he didn't fool anyone, but Falcon doesn't even try to do that!
There is a lot of nasty boiling right below the surface with this guy!
Falcon is simply the last thing we need running B.C.!
Never again!
Meaner? Seriously? Reality is the world is a mean place. I think you associate realist with mean. Its sad. Because our lifestyle is not sustainable AND NO ONE IS LISTENING. I want more services, I want less taxes. TAKE A LOOK AROUND.
hey Falcon thats for the carbon tax. Notice there is a con in his name.
Did I miss something, A third party starting up?????

Christmas Party.
Reading that, it sure looks like Falcon can sing like a bird ...... wonder if he realizes that.
Here is another dude that thinks the electorite is dummer than a Liberal.
The Falcon/McLaren connection stinks. Hope the falcon gets his wings clipped.
I think Campbells lips move every time Falcon speaks. Not a very good act. Gong! Next!
OMG couldn't agree with all the comments more. If we keep letting these Liberals control our economy, we will be a two tier province, the poor and the rich, no middle class anymore!!!! Very similar to 3rd world countries. Isn't a Falcon a bird of prey??? Scarey isn't he????
No Falcon please. We need someone in the middle of the spectrum. Not this right winger.
Everything he said was Gibberish. Nothing more. He hasnt got a bloody clue what the hell he is talking about.

He wouldnt recognize a train if it ran over his foot.

I doubt if he knows diddly squat about BC Hydro.

The HST is a piss poor tax at best, and any politician who is still supporting it after having 700,000 people vote against it, and a Premier kicked out of office because of it, obviously has some serious problems coming to grips with reality.

Kevin Falcon should resign now, so we dont have to listen to him for the next few years.

The **Third Party** that is coming is the BC First Party. I suspect that they will field 85 Candidates in the next election, and will be a big player. You can see their constituion, etc; on the web. Just look up BC Firt Party.

Have a nice day.
BC first party same old, same old. No changes just new faces and some old faces. Get rid of this party crap and elect who will help us.
Thats not how it works supertech. The system that is in place is the system we have to use. The only other alternative is to vote in Independents, and I dont see to many of them around.

You might be able to change the system over a period of many years, but in the meantime we have the party system.

So I guess we have to figure out who is the best of the the **Two or Three Evils**
non-partisan Party is the answer.

When an independent gets elected, they have the choice to join the non-partisan party. By joining the non-partisan party, they can choose who will fill the role of premiere. By having a party of independents, they need not toe the party line and so can serve those that elected them rather than the party they belong to.

A possible solution to break the party system. For the naysayers, how do you know this cannot work? We have been doing the same thing over and over again hoping for different result. With the freedom of the internet at everyone's disposal, the voters' awareness and dissatisfaction is growing more and more. What other possible solutions are there short of full scale revolution?
