Victoria, B.C. – As of February 2011, legislation requiring health-care facilities to report gunshot and stab wounds to police comes into effect in B.C.

The legislation is part of the plan to combat gang and gun violence. The legislation comes into effect Feb. 1, 2011.

"Often in cases of gunshots and stab wounds, a timely reaction by police  is critical to preventing further violence, injury or death," said Solicitor General Rich Coleman. "Setting out the rules for reporting these incidents means that police will get the information they need to expedite their response."

The Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics reports that for the past 30 years, the two primary methods used to commit homicide are shooting and stabbing.  In 2009, this trend continued, as there were 210 victims (36 per
cent) killed by stabbing and 179 victims killed by a firearm (30 per cent) in Canada.

Under the new Gunshot and Stab Wound Disclosure Act:

* All gunshot wounds must be reported to police regardless of origin.  Health professionals will not have to make any determination on criminality.
* Stab wounds will be reported at the discretion of the health-care facility so that they are not required to report accidental or self-inflicted wounds.
* Health facilities must verbally report to police as soon as possible without comprising an individual's treatment. Required information includes the patient's name, if known, and the name and location of the health-care facility where the patient is treated.
* Health facilities that are required to report include hospitals, doctor's offices and walk-in clinics.

Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta mandate reporting of both gunshot and stab wounds. Ontario, Nova Scotia and Quebec require gunshot wounds to be reported.

Gangsters who think they may be shot better watch some old Western movies on the Turner Network. I see lot of cowboys shot. Their sidekicks or one of the guys from the posse digs out his knife, pours whiskey over it, digs out the bullet and then heats up the same knife and cauterizes the wound. But I doubt that only because if the hero gets shot in the arm, he limps all the way to his horse, which he rides for hours. Any shot gangster who needs a doctor is just a plain yellow sissy. Man up, gangsters. You're supposed to be tough.
New market for underpaid GP's.
This was not already required, amazing.
people that get shot and stabbed for no reason might be scared to come in for treatment if there gonna be harrassed by the rcmp dont you think?..some people get stabbed at the bar and dont wanna have to rat the other guy out so they get patched up and call it a night.what is wrong with that?
If some wacko bozo stabbed me, and I lived, do ya think I would forgive him or call the cops? Give yer head a shake. Duh!
Hey James - how many people are stabbed for "no reason" and then dont want to have the police help them? ZERO
If you dont want to come in for help then bleed out - sorry, just another waste of oxygen. When I hear "known to police" and "not cooperating" then I go straight to GUILTY. Goodbye, do not pass go do not collect $200... Live a dirtbag life then die like a dirtbag. Society does not need these people
Ummm..really?..this is a new idea?...this activity used to be a secret?..and so how did that change..the gangsters don't get to write the laws anymore? Progress and the genius of our leaders at its best!
Better late, than never.
Every little bit helps.
What about the privacy act?? If someone took a shot at me, I would like to have the choice of phoning the police or shooting back.
um...what was the proceedure before this?
A bullet hole or a stab wound didn't warrant a call to the cops?
Really?
Doctors weren't allowed to release any patient information before that.
