Just How Much Has It Cost Us?

Just what will be the final tab in the matters that have been brought before the City of Prince George and the courts by Councillor Brian Skakun?
There was an investigation launched into a bribe that was, according to the councillor, made to him dealing with the location of the Casino in the down town core, leading up to the civic election.
That was investigated and no charges were ever laid, but the cost of the investigation surely ran in excess of $50,000 dollars.
Then came the Deloite Touché audit into the City's involvement in the development of the Gaming Centre and parkade in the downtown core. The cost of that, about $80,000 dollars.
The latest costs arise from the trial that is being held into the charge against Councillor Skakun that he breached the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Conservative estimates suggest that the trial will cost, about $70,000 dollars before it finally ends, and that is assuming there is no appeal. With the majority of that money coming from the taxpayers pockets by way of costs while nearly half will be eaten up in Councillor Skakun's costs.
There also is the matter of just how much the various employees (at the core of the leaked document) received in settlement from the City of Prince George.
There also still remains the question of whether anyone of those involved might decide to take a civil court approach to what they may believe to be the basis to clear their name.
All in all it would be interesting to know just how much the taxpayer is being called upon to foot the bill in these matters.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.
