As the Winter Olympics got underway in Torino Italy, here at home, the two day summit aimed at providing information on how northern communities can reap benefits of the 2010 games is underway.
In his opening remarks, Mayor Colin Kinsley , who is also the Chairman of the Prince George Spirit of B.C. Community Committee, talked about the opportunities being explored. Kinsley recognized that in addressing those who registered for the summit he is "speaking to the converted", people who know the games will keep us on a world stage.
"Yes the majority of the economic opporunity from the 2010 games will be in the 604" said the Mayor but he added "We have an opportunity to gain sport tourism before and after the fact, there is a huge amount of things we can do for our communities if we try." The Mayor went on to say that when it comes to seizing those opportunities communities have to be realistic "We will win some, we will lose some but we can try. That is what this summit is about."
During the course of this summit, there are expectations for an update on the Northern Sports Centre, and special announcements from MLA's Shirley Bond and Pat Bell.
