Prince George Cougars goalie Ty Rimmer made big saves early to keep the game scoreless, then made bigger saves late to preserve his second shut-out, and the Cougars third, this season.  Rimmer made 37 saves to get the Cougars back in the win column in a 6-0 victory over the Swift Current Broncos Tuesday.

The Cougars and Broncos were meeting for the first and only time this season, with the Cougars 3-and-1 against East Division teams heading into the game.  Rimmer made a couple of tough saves at the start of the game, including some Broncos chances on a first period power play.  Then the Cougars went to the man advantage nine minutes into the first period and capitalized for the first time in five games.  Charles Inglis snapped a sharp angle shot from the left wing through Broncos starting goalie Mark Friesen for his 14th goal of the season at 9:37 to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead, set up by Cody Carlson.  On the Cougars second power play of the period, they would add to their lead.  Greg Fraser got a rebound in front and then beat Friesen on the blocker side for his eighth goal of the year, a new career high, with assists to James Dobrowolski and Taylor Stefishen at 17:49.  The Cougars out-shot the Broncos 15-7.

In the second period, Martin Marincin would get another Cougars power play goal, firing a one-time shot from the right point past Friesen for his 10th goal of the year, giving the Cougars five players in double figures in goals.  Sena Acolatse and Inglis earned assists on the goal that forced a Broncos goaltending change, with Friesen allowing three goals on 16 shots.  Austin Smith came on in relief.  Spencer Asuchak would pad the lead a little more late in the second period, firing a wrist shot through Smith from the right wing for his 11th goal of the year and a 4-0 Cougars lead after two periods. Marincin had the only assist on the goal.  The Cougars out-shot Swift Current 12-10 in the middle frame.

Inglis would make it a three point night for himself, firing a one time shot from the slot past Smith just 33 seconds into the third to put the Cougars up 5-0 on his 15th goal of the year, which was unassisted.  Taylor Stefishen finished the scoring, banking a shot from the left wing boards off a Broncos defender in front of the goal and into the Broncos net for a 6-0 Cougars lead.  Wilson Dumais and Josh Smith picked up assists on the goal at 15:37.  The only question left was the goose egg on the Swift Current side of the scoreboard, which was challenged when leading scorer Justin Dowling broke in on a break away.  But Rimmer stayed with Dowling, who went to the backhand, and made a left pad save, keeping Swift Current off the board.  The Broncos had 20 shots in the third and 37 in the game, but could not solve Rimmer.  The Cougars added 16 more shots in the third for a three period total of 43, giving the Cougars 91 shots in the last two games.  The Cougars finished the night 3-for-4 on the power play, while the Broncos went 0-for-3, a big turnaround after allowing three goals on four Portland power plays Saturday.

The Cougars, who snapped a five game losing streak to improve to 16-14-2-1, get ready for a big showdown with the Kamloops Blazers Friday and Saturday at CN Centre, both starting at 7:00pm.  The Yellowhead Rotary Club of Prince George will be at Friday's game taking donations for the Prince George Food Bank and Saturday is the Cougars always popular Teddy Bear and Toque Toss Game.  Tickets are available by calling Ticketmaster at 250-564-5585.

It was a great game tonight. My first time to a Cougars game in 5 years. Oiced a good one to get reaquainted with the team. Was sad to see the small crowd. Apparently a franchise record low of 1500 and change. People don't know what they are missing. The team seems for real this year
Meant to say WAS a good one. Don't know where Oiced came from :-)
