Vancouver, B.C.- The RCMP in BC has a new chief.

Assistant Commissioner Peter Hourihan has taken on his responsibilities as the Commanding Officer for E Division. He replaces Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass who now oversees the RCMP operations in Western Canada in the role of Deputy Commissioner West.

"Assistant Commissioner Hourihan’s diverse and comprehensive experience in the RCMP will provide him with the background and skills he needs to take on this challenging role. I have always admired his leadership skills and common sense approach to problem solving, " says Deputy Commissioner West Gary Bass. "He has a proven track record of putting the public's needs first and I know that British Columbians will be well served by this appointment."

Assistant Commissioner Hourihan was most recently the Criminal Operations Officer for the RCMP in Alberta. He comes into this new leadership role with 34 years of service in the RCMP and has held a wide array of policing roles that include: Financial Crimes, General Duty, Traffic Services, Corporate Services Officer, and more, with postings in Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta and now British Columbia. Assistant Commissioner Hourihan also holds a law degree from the University of Ottawa.

"I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to serve the people of British Columbia. My philosophy is to learn from the past and to make improvements for a better future. The RCMP strives to be connected to our communities and my commitment is to strengthen those connections through strong communications and relationship building."

"Let's work together to make British Columbia the safest place to live," says Assistant Commissioner Peter Hourihan.

A formal change of command ceremony will take place on February 11, 2011 at the Seaforth Armouries.

WOW Ben, you gotta turn down some of those ads!
You site is becoming unusable. I have to close the window and restart the browser to go back or view another story.
Yep - agree Loki. I can't use this site at home on dialup anymore. It's so ad heavy it times out before it loads.
I've been fussing about all of the multiple animated graphics in the ads for some time. Last time I fussed, other readers thought I was saying no ads period. Not saying that - just TONE down the number of animated ones, spread them out so there are not so many on the site at the same time.
As I write there are at least 9 ads that are moving. For anyone with any type of visual difficulty - this much animation is a killer.
dial up?
Should win an award for...? Never seen a site that bombards the senses and overwhelms my CPU like this one.

Just sayin.
