Minister Bond makes the announcement at the Winter Opportunities Summit

Deputy Premier Shirley Bond has announced the Provincial government  is spending $330 thousand dollars on a new  score clock / jumbo tron  for centre ice at CN Centre.  "I love to see the replays" says Bond,  "This will let us all see those close ups and replays."

But there's more.

The full cost of the new system is $850 thousand and the balance of the funding is coming in the form of a loan from the Northern Development Initiatives Trust.

NDI Trust  says the communities in the Prince George region are supporting giving Prince George a loan of  $520 thousand dollars to make sure the jumbo tron  becomes a reality within the next few months.

Tom Madden, head of Leisure Services for the City says the loan is interest free and repayable over 5 years.  Madden says there will be a need to discuss with those already in the  business of t.v. cameras and production  to see what would bethe best system to employ.  He hopes the system, complete with cameras and production facilities, will be ready to operate in time for the hockey season next fall.   Madden says it is possible user fees could be charged to help recoup some of the costs of the  system but those discussions have yet to be held.  He expects funding to repay the "loan" will be part of the 2007 budget.

BOND..Fix our roads SCREW the New Clock, We need money for road repairs...YOU and the REST OF THE LIBERAL GOVERMENT ARE FOOLS.
forgive my total lack of enthusiasm. but when i hear of the waiting lists for surgery and lack of proper senior care facilities, i am appalled to read that the deputy premier would sooner see the replays. the multiplex is a business and as such cn should upgrade it's facilities as cn wishes and at their expense, not at the expense of the people in this area.
This seems like a good way to waste money when the liberals took office I though they were going to cut out the extravagance and do what was needed for regular folks I am pretty sure a over priced clock/tv isn't necessary.
Here we go again. $850,000.00 for a replay board so that 3000 hockey fans can see a replay. This is all Tax Payers money. The City Portion $500,000.00 will have to be paid back in 5 years and of course the Money will come from some more tax increases. This borders on insanity. We cant fix the Cameron St. Bridge for $724,000.00 so we will dislocate thousands of drivers for 2 1/2 years until a New Bridge is built. But we can put up a stupid replay board for 3/4 of a Million dollars and have it ready for hockey season next fall. The way things are going they should have the replay board up and running about one year before the Cougers leave town.
What a waste of money. The wrong capital "investment" at the wrong time for the wrong reasons.

Thanks squirrely, oops shirley. Wowsers, what a deal, borrow 520 thousand and get a measely 350 from ol gordy and company. Let me guess one of gordo's bud gets the contract to sell it, install it and maintain the glorious jumbo tron? We all watch enough television. And besides like many others have said, are the Cat's even going to be around in 2 years?

later.........
I think this is the wrong kind of use for those funds. My impression when these funds were created was that they were created to aid entrepreneurs in build new and dynamic economic activity. This in no way qualifies for those funds in that context.

IMO the whole idea of funding a jumbo tron is to increase turnout at the hockey games and thus the experience and profits forth Multiplex and Rick Brodski. Brodski's made millions out of this community and stand to make the biggest gain from such an investment of our tax dollars.

I think if Brodski thinks he can 2000 people in the stands from this kind of entertainment value added investment then he stands to make what $2 million a year in revenue. If one is to make a measly $2 per additional ticket buyer assuming fixed costs are variable then this alone would pay for the JumboTron at market interest rates over the same time frame.

IMO the Northern Development Initiatives Trust should not be funding these kinds of projects. I even think there other projects were questionable as well. It looks like patronage to me, which is an insult considering the funds are a political buy off for selling BC Rail with out the publics consent. Why is it that all these give aways are interest free loans? How does this ensure a perpetual source of funds for future economic growth projects? Maybe they should have had the credit union manage the funds with the credit unions multiplier effect and non-partisan business common sense?
So, Replays? Did they buy a camera and hire a camera operator too? Or the good folks at CKPG are now going to send another couple of people to play back shots from the two highlite cameras? Not something that just happens. Not easily anyhow.. Seeing as the clock that is in place now does not tuck up out of the way as well as it should to allow lighting grids for concerts etc. it'll be interesting to see how it is used lots of concerts do bring sophisticated TV equipment these days... Seeing as this is all a done deal- while being a rather questionable addition at this time to the CN Centre experience when there are other uses for such a $$$ outlay, lets enjoy it. No doubt when properly used the Jumbotron will enhance a lot of events held there.
Don: "BOND..Fix our roads SCREW the New Clock, We need money for road repairs..."

Precisely!

My pet peeve! Potholes, cracks, undulating pavement, longitudinal ridges that are high enough to trip over when crossing Central Street and Victoria!

Soon the struts and shocks will have to be replaced again, at my own expense, of course!

I am going to start saving my repair bills and I am going to start suing those in government who WILL NOT pay attention for the damages to my late model very expensive vehicle!

If I were to use the "pothole alert" phoneline to report the potholes that I dodge everyday I would have to spend a whole hour on the phone!

Get real, for heaven's sake!!!
I am really glad that I am getting all this first-class and often disturbing information on Opinion250!

This is a totally disrespectful and irresponsible squandering of our tax dollars on a very low priority luxury!

By the way, is recall still an option in British Columbia???
Monies from the Northern Development Initiaives Trust must be used for the following catagories
(a) Forstry Pine Beetle Recovery
(b) Transportation
(c) Tourism
(d) Mining
(e) Olmpic Opportunities
(f) Small Business
(g) Economic Development
(h) Energy

Now **WHAT WOULD HOMER SIMPSON DO**

Classify the Replay board as a Tourism catagory and spend $500,000.00 for a replay board. (Not to mention the cost of running such a thing) Maybe Homer should be our releif Mayor as they both seem to make the same kind of decisions. He could watch out for things while Colin in travelling.
