Prince George, B.C. – While the specific numbers for North District are not available, it is clear, there are still a lot of people who are ignoring the anti-drinking and driving message.
Half way through the annual CounterAttack program, and RCMP say the number of Immediate Road Prohibitions and excessive speed tickets are too high.
In the 15-day period, police across the province have dealt with:
• 167 impaired drivers who were criminally charged,
• 264 drivers who received a 3-day IRP (of which 139 drivers had their vehicles impounded for 3 days),
• three drivers who received a 7-day IRP (of which 2 drivers had their vehicles impounded for 7 days),
• 536 drivers who received a 90-day IRP (all 536 drivers faced a mandatory 30-day vehicle impoundment), and
• 118 drivers who were charged with excessive speed (of which 117 drivers had their vehicle impounded for 7 days and one driver had his/her vehicle impounded for 30 days)
"We will use every enforcement tool that is available to us to make the biggest impact” says Corporal Jamie Chung of   “E” Division Traffic Services. “Our goal is to reduce the number of people killed or serious injured on our roadways. It is unacceptable to have an average of 133 people killed every year because of drunk driving.  If you continue to drive under the influence; prepare to lose your licence, to have your vehicle impounded, to pay hefty fines, and to possibly face criminal charges."

OK then, rescind the legislation, no more contraventions.

I don't remember ever asking my MP for this law.
Fully agree Loki, what did they expect would happen?
Wow, that is over a 1000 people. That is 1.5 percent of the population, Thus we must all know someone that got busted.

my wife won't let me drive, if I had more than a drink.
i say throw them all in jail and impound there vehicles so they lose there jobs and are poor.im pretty sure thats gonna stop the rest of the world from drinking and driving
Gee man, that's kind of harsh.
its hard to remember that kilometers and mph are 2 differant cups of tea.correct me if iam wrong but 65km/h is40mph and 30km/p is 18 mph you all have to sneeze and the man will get ya !!kilo per hour leaves ya no room for error ,, and it sounds nasty too !!holy@#!!! 40 kilo over !!!!! i dont know just a thought maybee iam just too old
JT: why, so the lawyers can make out like bandits?

How about a summeray conviction with sentencing imposed on the spot by a police person. No judge, jury, assumption of innocence, or contestment of charges?
That sir, is a police state in a nutshell. Welcome to the new world order.

BC taxpayers even paid for campbell to attend the bilderberger conference. No conflict of interest there (sic).
"It is unacceptable to have an average of 133 people killed every year because of drunk driving." Another quote in the article that you seemed to have ignored.
You may not have asked for this law Loki, but I'm sure the vast majority of BC residents are quite happy with it. It's really very simple, if you don't like the law, don't put yourself in the position where the RCMP have to enforce it on you.

I make a habit of not making it personal but hey, He Spoke - shouldn't you be the one making the decision not to drive after one drink.

One possible reason for the apparent large numbers is that the RCMP now have legislation that allows them to take immediate action. Given this power - they are using it - and good for them!

In the past, many impaired drivers get cases thrown out of court on a technicality. Prior to the new legislation far too often the RCMP gave a warning or 24 hour suspension as they didn't want to get tied up in court. The new legislation gives immediate determent to those that push the limits.

I'm not a saint but with the new legislation I won't even take a taste test at the liquor store - don't want it on my breath. If I'm drinking, I'm at home, cabbing it, or my spouse is driving - and that decision is made before we go out.

bozo the clown.... for the excessive speed (148(1) of the MVA) you must be at least 41kph over. think your your residential street. now think of a car doing 91kph. thats the minimum threshold these guys are doing, thats not a sneeze. (thats 25.48mph over the speed limit, just to help ya out)
as far as the new penalties re: .05, Im all for them. It's voluntary, if you want to lose your ride, have a few drinks and then drive. That said, a taste at the BCLC won't put you over the .05 limit. (Im not disagreeing with your policy, opine...I actually agree with it - it just wont make you illegal unless you have an "N" (then its 0 BAC.
Hey Opine, an excellent post, but give He Spoke a break, shucks. Sounds like he's got a good marriage goi'n, they're a team, good thing.
I applaud anyone who takes Opine's stance. Anything that keeps my neighbors or loved ones safe on our roads is a good thing. Glad we got Steinhauser and the rest of them keeping us safe.
Opine, in a sense, I am making that choice, when i hand the keys to her.

Those good ole days, when you covered one eye so you can pick a lane is long gone and over with. Those were the days my friend.
Thanks to the statute of limitations - we can talk about the old days without them coming to take us away. I just don't talk about it! ... don't want anyone to know!
They should be pushing new legislation on the criminal types. If you get caught with drugs, intent to sell, weapons, restricted weapons etc. automatic sentence. No court, no lawyers, no time off for good behaviour or time served. But I guess ICBC wouldn't make as much not hitting the majority of the people. At least criminals have their rights.
With our justice system increasingly becoming more bark than bite, I think we should expect even more people in the future to "thumb their nose at the system".

"Thousands of criminal cases in B.C. are at risk of being stayed for unreasonable delay due to a shortage of provincial court judges, according to a report released Thursday by the B.C. provincial court."

For all of those who think this rule is stupid, google killed by a drunk driver. You don't want the impound DON'T DRIVE DRUNK!!! Pretty friggen simple.
Once we get rid of the people who drive drunk and kill 133 people per year, which is 1/3 of the fatalities, how do you propose that we deal with the people who kill the other 266???

There is no law against stupid driving, and the police do not seem to be charging anyone (sober) with criminal negligence, driving without due care and attention, dangerous driving, etc;

So do we just accept the 266 that are killed for other reasons, and concentrate on the drunk drivers. Seems we do. I would think that the person being killed could care less, whether the driver was drunk, stupid, or dangerous. Dead is dead.

Nobody is saying that anybody should drink and drive!! What I am saying ( and many others I think) is that we won't be judged by some overzealous cop at the side of the road. Give me a damn break. I WILL HAVE MY DAY IN COURT, and that court is not at the side of the road, GET IT!!!

British Columbia is a POLICE STATE, deal with it. I did, I moved to a different Province. I lived in B.C. for 58 years, that's it, never coming back! What a SH!+ hole.
Get rid of the Wood Wheaton Ads in the middle of the comments, or I am out of here.
Or Pat Bell And Shirley Bond or any other ad you want to plaster in my face. Sorry, that takes the cake for me. Ads off to the side are fine, but don't block the articles I want to read with ads that I haven't clicked on.
"It is unacceptable to have an average of 133 people killed every year because of drunk driving."

That statement is not a Prince George stat. That is a BC stat and is a tiny bit of 4.5 million people. I suspect a lot of those killed were not from BC as well as a lot of the drivers. 133 is probably a number that will only go up in the future when the Liberals lower the drinking age in their quest for more tax dollars.

An end to deaths and disability caused by alcohol is in sight, it is a frustratingly difficult goal to reach.

Beautiful British Columbia????

What a lark!
Speaking about a justice system in decline the following is from a recent news headline titled "Wife killer gets life without parole for 10 years".

James Gary Urbaniak was sentenced Friday to life without parole 10 years for killing his common-law wife last year.

The judge agreed to a joint sentencing submission by Urbaniak's lawyer and the Crown prosecutor.

Urbaniak, 29, strangled Jessica Martel, 27, in her Morinville home north of Edmonton on April 29, 2009 while their three young children were in the house.

"This is a selfish, brutal, immature, pathetic offender,” said Crown prosecutor Michelle Doyle during a sentencing hearing Friday morning. “This is a man who killed his wife because she wanted to be free of him. “

“These children watched their hero kill every bit of security that existed in their young lives," she told the courtroom packed with Martel’s friends and family, some who quietly wept.

Urbaniak, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in October 2010, sat in the prisoner's box without reaction.

Doyle called the murder the end result of Urbaniak's "obsessive need to control Jessica” because of his “pathetic jealousy."

Martel had wanted to leave her common-law husband of 10 years, Doyle said.

Martel was severly beaten and strangled.

taxinapothole: Just be thankful that you didn't live in some African countries, where, if a policeman pulled you over and you were drunk, out came the pistol and one shot to the head was the solution.

Seems like the people who don't want to take responsibility for their own actions and choices are the ones who have the biggest problem with law enforcement. If a person doesn't want to live in society with laws that society has established to keep EVERYBODY safer, then they should seriously consider moving to one that better suits their lifestyle. There are lots of those places out there. The resason we have such a high standard of living here is because people, for the most part, co operate for the common good and respect the rights of others and the laws we have all come up with for everybody's benefit.
Here's wishing you a very Good Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year.
Hey taxinapothole.....You hit the nail on the head. Exactly how it is.
