BC New Democrats Set Leadership Date

Prince George, B.C. - The B.C. New Democratic Party's provincial council has set next April 17th as the date for a leadership vote to replace Carole James, who resigned earlier this month.
A leadership assembly will take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre, but party members will be able to cast ballots via telephone or internet during the assembly, or by taking part in advance polling.
"Setting the date and location for the leadership election is a key step in the leadership election process," says the party's Provincial Secretary, Jan O'Brien. "Over the coming weeks we will continue to develop a comprehensive set of rules to govern the election, and we will ensure that this leadership election is run in a fair, transparent, and accessible manner."
She says, "It's an exciting time to be a New Democrat in British Columbia, and we're looking forward to a competitive leadership election."
Individuals must be members of the BC NDP for ninety days prior to the Election Day in order to be eligible to vote in the leadership race.
Meantime, O'Brien says an interim leader is expected to be ratified by the BC NDP Provincial Council on the recommendation of the BC NDP caucus in early 2011.
