Prince George, B.C.- The Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Northern Health Authority has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Prince George due to high levels of fine particulate matter.
The provincial air quality objective for fine particles, PM2.5, is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 28 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site and 18 µg/m3 at College Heights at 10 am today.
The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles, PM10, is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 49 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown and 28µg/m3 at College Heights at 8 pm today.
Based on the air quality data, the high levels are mainly due to a combination of wood smoke and emissions from industry.
Stagnant conditions over the region yesterday resulted in pollutants accumulating in the air shed. Winds are expected to increase and conditions are expected to gradually improve over the next 24 hours.
This Air Quality Advisory is expected to be in effect at least until tomorrow morning, with an update to be provided this afternoon at 4:00 pm. today.
The advisory means, the City will be offering free bus rides from midnight tonight, until midnight of the day the advisory is cancelled ( unless of course it is on a day when there will be no service such as Christmas and Boxing Day)
