Avalanche Danger Considerable Says Forecast Centre

Prince George, B.C. - The Canadian Avalanche Centre warns the risk of avalanche in many of the popular areas to the south and east of Prince George is “considerable”. (see image at right)That means, there are dangerous avalanche conditions and sledders will need to carefully evaluate the snowpack. Under that rating, natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are likely.
However, the forecast centre has little information on what has been happening in the North rockies region which includes McBride to the east and Chetwynd to the north. ( see image bottom right)
The forecast centre offers this special message about that particular area:
"The shallow weak snowpack in the region has not been producing avalanches because the snow has not developed into a slab above the weak layers. The forecast snow combined with strong Southwest winds and warm temperatures may start to consolidate the upper levels of the snowpack. If you find that the upper layers stiffen enough to carry the weight of snowmobiles, then you should consider moving into areas where this slab does not exist."
