Prince George, B.C. – Prince George City Council has voted to establish a select committee to review remuneration for Council and the Mayor’s office. Council has also approved the recommendation that calls for any possible changes to be held back to at least 2012.
"There won't be any benefit to the current Council" says Finance Committee Chair Murry Krause. He also adds that it is expected the analysis and decisions would be made well in advance of this year's election which is slated for November.
The last review was conducted in 1999. At that time, the Mayor’s salary was deemed to be at the top of the list of peer communities, while the money paid to Councillors was 8th among the ten communities in the comparison.
The current salary of the Mayor of Prince George is $91,235.00 but Councillor's are paid just $23,488.00.
Mayor Rogers says he fully expects the review will show that Prince George Councillors are still at the low end of the spectrum when it comes to salary comparisons with their peers in other communities.
Councillor Dave Wilbur says the issue of salary increases will be a "Lightening rod" for some members of Council, but he welcomes the review "It will bring forward with clarity, through a transparent process, the knowledge of where we're at on a grid with other communities."
