Prince George, B.C. - Yesterday's official announcement that Telus will invest $1.5-million dollars and create 100 new jobs at its 6th Avenue call centre location has made Mayor Dan Rogers' weekend...

He says, "Telus has reaffirmed something we have been saying for a while, that the future for both the city and our downtown is bright and this is another sign of the faith the private sector has in our community."

Rogers says the local economy will benefit, not only from the office expansion, "But more importantly, because it will bring another 100 well paid jobs to the downtown."

Telus says the investment was made to support the growth of its Optik TV services.

Telus says the investment was made to support the growth of its Optik TV services... so Mr Rogers. I doubt you had anything to do with this...

And even though I think this is wonderful, being as it is Telus, I am skeptical as to how long it will last.

Wonder how long before they move this south as well....
Where in the story was Rogers quoted as saying he had something to do with it?

I also like how it took exactly one post to put a negative slant on the addition of 100 jobs to our community that pay roughy $40K a year. Par for the course around here it seems.
$40,000.00 per year is approx $19.25 per hour. Not a bad wage once you factor in holidays, pensions, etc;

Where did the $40,000.00 per year number come from. I didnt see it in the article.
Palopu, that info is from the Telus careers website. Not sure if all the jobs will be full time or part time, but it's still a pretty good base wage and a way to get you in the door.
Either way I'm sure they pay better then min wage and enough to make a living at for lots who don't have any specific skills/training or education . That is good news.
They make $40,000 a year at a Telus call center?? WOW, I wonder why they can't get people with any kind of an education then.

Have any of you tried to talk to these people? Dumb and dumber comes to mind.
The big picture? One service provider will replace another. There has certainly been growth in the TV program transmission business from zero in Canada some 60 years ago and from zero in PG about 50 years ago. The advent of cable and satellite resulted in exponential growth.

We are near the top of the growth curve for a relatively stable population. Competitors are now trying to increase their market share. You and I suffer by getting letters in our mail every single month from Shaw, calls from Shaw, and now calls from Telus.

They tell us that free enterprise results in efficiencies. I think sometimes it does and other times it does not. In this case we have gained some employees who are going to sit here rather than someplace else in order to telemarket or provide technical assistance.

But ..... when push comes to shove, there is nothing that ties these people to PG. These jobs are not tied to some local raw material that is not available elsewhere.

So, as we have already seen, such jobs are very vulnerable each time the company reviews it operations for effectiveness and cost.
