Prince George, B.C. - A sell-out crowd of 800 gathered in Prince George on Thursday evening to pay tribute to B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell on what would be his last 'official' visit to the city...

In addition to a video tribute from the three prime ministers who served during the same time Campbell was in office -- Jean Chretien, Paul Martin, and Stephen Harper -- local MLAs, Pat Bell and Shirley Bond presented a 'gift' to their long-time colleague and friend, that will serve as a lasting legacy in northern B.C..

Bell and Bond announced the 'Gordon Campbell Endowment Fund' -- a $125-thousand dollar endowed fund that will be held by the Prince George Community Foundation.  Bell says, "The goal of the fund will be to provide a full scholarship to a graduate of a northern B.C. secondary school to attend UNBC and we've asked the Premier to select if there's specific programming that he'd like to see supported -- so what programs might be eligible for that scholarship."

The local MLA says the money came from number of donors, primarily in Prince George, but from throughout the region covered by UNBC.  "People from all walks of life have contributed."  Bell says the fund remains open to contributions and the hope is to collect enough money to also offer a second full scholarship -- this one to a student planning to attend the College of New Caledonia.

"Shirley and I wanted to do something for Gord that would be meaningful," says Bell.  "We have appreciated his efforts in the north."

Speaking to circumstances surrounding Campbell's decision to step down as premier, Bell says he believes , "Time will heal a few of the wounds that have perhaps occurred in the last few years here, but, I think, in 10-, 15-, 20-years, people will look back and see Gordon Campbell as one of the great builders of northern British Columbia."

"In Honor of The Premier" Too bad he has no honor to warrant it.
IMO the guy should be in jail, rather than being honored... and the lows never seem to low for this bunch of professional perjury specialists.

In twenty years time he will be vilified for robing the future of the next generation when they look back to who stole their future for profits of the day rewarding friends and political connections over good policy for the long run.
20 Years time? People can't even remember how messed up the NDP left the Province before we kicked them out.

Gordon Campbell will be rememebered for fixing what the NDP destroyed and a very successful Winter Olympics where Canada broke the record for most Gold Won by the hosting city. Bravo!
And these record gold medal wins have changed or helped our province and people how? Especially people outside the lower mainland. And don't say tourism because is a result of the olympics because tourism is no stronger in BC today than before the olympics. And tourism for the most parts is only profitable for a few, not the people who work for 8 bucks an hour.
OK I'll bite
What was the debt when the NDP left
What was the defecit
What was the debt to GDP
What was the dollar figure on the money from Ottawa
.????
How many mines have opened since
How many mills have shut
What kind of shape is BC Hydro in
What's the child poverty rate

I'm not an NDP cheerleader, I just wish the Campbell lovers would take off their rose colored glasses and get down to the real facts. The media is in bed with this lot, so you won't get those numbers on the nightly news.

New party please!
"People can't even remember how messed up the NDP left the Province before we kicked them out."

Yes.

After ten years of NDP: Beautiful British Columbia = Official Have Not Status Province!

How can anybody forget that?

Remembering the effect the NDP had on B.C. and loathing the idea of a repeat performance does not mean automatic full approval of the Liberals or looking at them through rose colored glasses! If NDP apologists would take off THEIR rose colored glasses they would have to admit that the last ten years were better for B.C. than the ten years before that!

Is it time for a new party? It sure is! Is there a new party on the horizon? One which could get elected and form a new government, relegating both the NDP and the Liberals to opposition status? No.

Therefore, it's always vote for the *lesser evil* when it's time to mark the ballot, at least for some who have learned from recent history.
Numbers?
i agree with you govsux.
I believe that that the Mike Harcourt NDP was a lot different than the Glen Clark NDP. Clark was not good; however, as bad as he was, Campbell has been terrible. Regardless of Campbell's lack of respect for the truth, which some posters seem to have no problem with,
he has given too much to his Howe St cronies; the HST transfers tax from business to the average British Columbian. The Liberals bed fellows, the media will tell us how good it is for us.
I'm glad to see him go; i hope his Party follows.
PrinceGeorge, is that you Shirley.
I guess the first test of the new government or new Liberal leader running the province, will be what happens to the hst?
You can bet that if the hst gets thrown out they will just put the pst on everything or jack it up to 8%. The next round of clowns will be so happy they won, they will give themselves a big fat raise and there will be nothing that we can do about it.
So all we need to do is get up and go to work each day if you have a job, pay our taxes like good little consumers and be thankful of where we live!

Come on Pat, "perhaps occurred" The man is an out an out liar and lots has occurred, no perhaps about it. Bye Gord. Close the door on your way out.
"PrinceGeorge, is that you Shirley."

No, it's me.
Sell out crowd - should be
1) people who sold out to campbell
or
2) certain crowd of people bought out by campbell.
C'mon folks. The word is honOUR. Not honor like in the US. Don't ya hate the Americans enuff to use the "Queen's English"? For lashes with a wet noodle if ya don't start following the rules. OK? Try and see through the brainwashing when it comes to the USAs version of spell check. Ya did finish high school, didn't ya?
honour is pronounced "on-er"

honor is pronounced "on-er"

in Boston it is pronounced "on-ah"

In other words, the English speaking world really does not know how to spell or pronounce the words they write. Is it any wonder when there are so many rules and more exceptions to the rules of converting the spoken word to the written word!

At least the USA spelling is closer to the standard pronounciation ... or as the forward thinkers would write - "pronunnciashun" ... ;-)

To the person who likes to remove posts, I guess the truth hurts. I guess drinking and driving is alright as long as your the Premier. To use the mans name in the same sentence as honour must be a mistake. The scholarship is a great idea though.
Let's face it folks, there are those throughout the world who understand when to leave the organization they lead and there are those who hang on too long.

In my opinion, the latter suffer the wrath of not only those who have always been against the leadership and would have liked to see someone else in charge, but also those who were originally supporters but have either changed their outlook on life or can see that the circumstances and events have changed the way in which the leadership ought to be seen.

Historians do know, however, that those thoughts of the current folks will matter less and less, and the impact of the decisions of those in power will weighed by others in the future with the totally different vantgage point of hindsight.

THAT will be what will decide how Gordon will be remembered in retrospect and in relation to others that came before him and others who will come after him.

Just to put that into context, it is likely that none of us will be remembered in any meanigful way by more than our immediate family for more than one or two generations.

So enjoy it while you can. Pretty soon there will be a new target of adulation as well as denigration.

Does it make any of you wonder what kind of character it must be to want a job like that? ...... ;-)
all politics aside it is great to have another scolarship opportunity for students, and a large one at that :)
You never made a mistake, dirtcheap? Must be nice to be perfect. Can you teach us that?
In today's investment terms, a $125K fund = to about $5K dollars per year that could be awarded without drawing down on it, I would think.

Nevertheless, $5K to someone or more than one if smaller amounts are handed out is still better than nothing.
I wonder where our BC rail went.

No. We've already found that out.
Interesting that parked up at the airport is a Dassault falcon trijet. It is a charter jet out of Europe used to haul bigwigs around the world. It showed up in time for Gords sendoff. I wonder who was on it or is it a ride for Gord, again maybe just a coincidence. Just wondering.
If anyone wants more information on the jet just do an internet search with its registration, HB-IUX.
I think I'm gonna throw up.
The jet showed up for Gord's sendoff?

Well, I guess it also showed up in time for the debate of the Titans - 6 in all + "handlers"?

Maybe Jimmy wanted his next premier to be comfy. :-)
"Doneright"

BC Rail is now called CN and it is still there, or the last time I checked the trains were still derailing.

We all waste money, the government is just a large example of someone with a new credit card. I bet everyone who posts here has some kind of handheld device that they waste money on. Oh and you never have driven impaired? Impaired driving isn't just about alcohol. Next time you have any kind of cold remedy that could make you drowsy you are impaired by the definition. And answer that handheld device while driving is going to get you in trouble too.
Criminals are the ones that break the law and get caught. The rest will get caught one day.

Ah, the 'globalised' world! Rest assured such trappings of grandeur on the part of "our" politicians won't be sacrificed with the coming "austerity" now sweeping through Europe, and soon to hit here.

The bigwigs may have been checking out the airport facilities, such as extended runway, re-fueling stations, customs offices...and Prince George!

Yes the huge runway with no where to put stuff and not enough fuel to fill one 747.
Big jets landing here to refuel/reload isn't going to happen on a regular basis anytime soon but at least the runway is there sitting waiting for one day.

Planes just can't fly anywhere, they have to follow the flightways. As the crow flies gps navigation just doesn't happen way up there yet. So they have to fly nav point to nav point which is most likely over another airport. So since you have to fly there anyway (Alaska) you might as well stop for fuel.

Gus:"Maybe Jimmy wanted his next premier to be comfy. :-)"

Great remark! Jimmy seems to have a thing for Premiers and Ex-Premiers - I know JImmy had a job waiting for Glen Clark upon retirement and I understand that he is apparently now on the board of directors of Canfor Corporation.

This is what is called the upper crust or elite...
Nosverance that is not totaly true. Aircraft can fly about anywhere they want onroute to their destination depending on traffic. Nav points as you call them are not airport specific. Longhaul flights fly the great circle routes, the shortest distance, and as the flightaware website shows many flights pass over PG daily.

Since the economic downturn cargo flights are picking up and once a more standard fueling and cargo infrastructure are in place we should see some action here.
You might as well be an optimist, futile but positive.
I rest my case.
PG is on IFR Nav map as a point of navigation on a flightway. Airline companies would save huge dollars in fuel if they didn't have to follow those flightways. Have you ever noticed the con trails alter course over PG? Flights coming from Alaska heading south fly to PG then alter course over PG. Why wouldn't they just fly straight to their destination?

They have to follow IFR flight rules.

Sure we have a nice big runway but there really isn't a reason to stop here at all.
