Prince George, B.C.- Prince George City Council meets this evening for a regular meeting, and will look at options from moving traffic flow to two way traffic in the downtown.
Staff will present a plan that calls for the development of two roundabouts, one at Cassiar and 5th, the other at 3rd and Vancouver, to make the switch to two way traffic. The changes could cost just under $2 million dollars.
Also on the agenda, a call from recreational hockey and the minor hockey association that the City take a second look at its plans to  demolish and build a new Kin 1 for the Canada Winter Games. The request is for a new facility to be built as well as upgrades made to the existing Kin 1 and Kin 2. The belief is  this will ensure there is no loss of facility use while a new one is being built and will have a positive impact on cost control.
Council will be asked to take another step towards being a bear smart community. The Conservation Officers from the Ministry of the Environment will present their final report on bear activity in the City over the past year. There were 1925 bear calls in the city last year. Of that number, 1901 were black bear, and 24 were grizzly bears.   The number one attractant for bears continues to be garbage (recorded as the attractant in 566 calls), followed by fruit trees (160), bird feeders (67) and berry bushes (47).

While we are at it , why not build a bunch of roundabouts it the VLA ? This will surely make the tour of the crack houses , hookers and gangs easier on traffic flow too. Why would we spend millions to host these games when we have nothing to offer the rest of the country besides Hookers , Homeless , Street Gangs and streets that resemble a bomb range? I am not entirely against these games, just the timing. There is so much more we should be spending this money on before laying ourselves out there for the world to see. Our city has a bad enough reputation, so why put it on public display? Fix the issues at hand before creating more.
Why doesn`t the city pay off half the other crap they wasted their money on before wasting more. Sounds like that would be the responsible thing to do.
After driving around the town core a lot of over the weekend,I can honestly say I don't think I have seen the roads in worse shape.
Secondary roads included.
So much ice build up on side streets that some are almost impassable.
Many parking lots are an absolute mess, as well.
And potholes?
Is this what can be expected during the winter games?
The entire town is a damn mess, other than the by-pass, which is only mediocre at best.
Some things never change...in fact, some tnings just get worse.
Not enough equipmemt?
Get more.
Not enough staff?
Get more...oddly enough, there is always money for everything else.
I kind of like what Tractor is saying. Lets clean up some of the backlogged debts before we blindly waste money on turnarounds.

As far as the Kin Centers. well, were in it, lets git'er dun.

Between this idea and the City Hall wanting to fix up the Farmers Market Building I`m thinking there are a few flakey dreamers in city hall.
Kin 1 is in desperate need of upgrades. Played hockey there last night and our dressing room was colder than it was outside and out of the two showers that were in our room, one had the cold water tap broken so we couldn't use it, the other had no shower head. It was like showering with a fire hose.
Erin. Doesnt the City have a maintenance program for these buildings.???

I think that the reason we are getting roundabouts and changing the streets from one way to two way is because of the location of the New Police Station. At present 4th is one way which restricts traffic from going West from the station. You have to go South you have to avoid the residential, school, and hospital to the West, so you end up at 15th. This is not good for police access to the West end of the City, 2nd, is also one way. So the solution is to change the streets to 2 way.

Of course the cost of changing the streets will go to a different budget, and will not show as being part of the New Police station. Thats how its done. Smoke and mirrors, and misinformation.

Have a nice day.
I have a challenge that I would like to put out to Dan the Man,anyone at council or IPG!How about you attract one major retail investor downtown before you spend one more cent on roundabouts, sidewalks, etc. The investor has to have permits and have begun construction before you people can attempt to remodel anything downtown. This would provide a little more motivation for the powers that be,to actually accomplishing something the public could stand behind and support.
I agree with Jakeadoo. Put your money where your mouth is Dan. No support until you produce.
By the way, I would leave the one way streets alone. They changed it years ago for the better. Why go mess it up?
I too would agree with Jakeadoo. And remember it has to be a retail investor. Not the new Telus call center.
What do the city planners and city council have any business wasting another 2 million taxpayer dollars on the proposed roundabouts? It is strictly assine to think there is any legitimate reason that this will improve the traffic flow downtown.Once again it is shows that the city council as well as the senior management at the city should be purged as they have wasted eveyone's time and the taxpayers hard earned money on their own personal agenda.Downtown P.G. will never be resurected or even remotely revitalized with all the pesonal agendas that go on behind the scenes. The taxpayers have wasted Forty some odd years listening to this retoric and nothing will ever come from it.Why doesn't somebody bring real change to our town?Bring infrastructer, jobs, people and prosperity here before you waste anymore money on the downtown.
I agree that the cost has no commensurate benefit. It will produce nothing tangible. If we are wrong on this, then we have not been properly informed. Where is the cost benefit analysis for this project?

If the police station is causing this, it is just one more reason why it is in the wrong place.
