The local delegation off to the 2006 Torino Winter Games

Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley, Initiatives Prince George President Gerry Offet and five others part of "Team Torino" will head for the airport a little later this morning to fly to Italy in a bid to drum up interest in our region during the final week of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

IPG President Gerry Offet says those on the "Team" with business and trade interests will spend tomorrow in Milan at the Canadian Consulate.  "They've arranged a number of meetings with potential investors, importers, and other business people who have a sincere interest in Northern British Columbia."

For cost reasons, Offet says Milan is actually where the local group will be staying.  He says it's 1.5-hours by train from Turin and the group expects to be taking the first train out at 5:18 am and the last one back at 11pm for the remainder of the week.

Premier Gordon Campbell will be hosting a breakfast Tuesday morning at BC/Canada House in downtown Turin and Offet says, "We'll be attending and meeting some of the heads of other country's delegations and talking about training opportunities."

"The following day, the 23rd, we're hosting a reception," says the IPG President, "We've invited more than 300 people who, again, are team managers and presidents of national sport organizations -- the people who make decisions related to training activities."

Offet says Thursday is B.C. Wood Council Day at B.C./Canada House.  "And we'll be spending the day with people from all over the world who have an interest in wood construction and milling techniques and, basically, giving the Northern B.C. message."

When asked about criticism over this trip, Offet quotes Mayor Colin Kinsley, who says, "If we do nothing and spend nothing, we're assured of getting nothing." (see previous story)

Offet, himself, says, "We think we've done our homework on this one and that if we don't come back with firm commitments, we're going to come back with expressions of interest that will translate into firm commitments."

If you don't come back with solid written commitments I suggest you do the honourable thing and return the money spent for the Torino trip/entertainment to the city treasury so a stretch of murderous potholes can be repaired on West Austin Road and Croft Road.

In fact, both of these roads are several years overdue for a complete resurfacing and repaving.
Patching up over countless previous patches simply isn't really an option anymore!

(I know, you need several millions $ for a refrigerated outdoor skating oval so we seem to completely out of luck).
WASTE OF time and money. I like all the phony smiles in the picture. Allthough I would be smiling if I were heading to Italy for free.

later.........
Hosting a reception?? Inviting over 300 people. Whos kidding who. Where did they get the list of people to invite. Do they know 300 people who will be available to attend on the 23rd. Who is paying for the reception. Will we see a list of costs for this endeavour, or will it all be buried in the IPG budget. We will not get one smidgen of additional business from this trip. Will our sheep (I mean councillors) demand an accounting for this trip. Or will they continue to use their rubber stamps.
If one does just a little research one finds that Turin is trying to put itself back on the road of economic recovery by putting on these Winter Games. It used to be home to Italy's thriving FIAT car manufacturing, but that was thriving a long time ago.

If anything the people of Turin are trying to attract tourism and investment dollars for Turin and the area surrounding it.

One story says that the Games will either make or break Turin, so draw you own conclusions as to how eager everyone there is to export tourism and industry Euros to Prince George, British Columbia, Canada!
SHOULD HAVE SPENT THE MONEY GOING TO PRINCE RUPERT TO GAIN SUPPORT FOR OUR INLAND CONTAINER PORT. TEAM TORINO GETS THE GOLD--WE GET THE SHAFT.
careful edmund ... I think you are whining ....

the only difference between you and others is that you are whining about different things ... ;-)

your post does not contain anything informative ...
Call it what you will, however if people do not agree with the status quo around here they are blamed for being whiners, complainers, negative, etc. The fact of the matter is that most people in this town do not know or care what is happening to their tax dollars. Those that do, complain and so they should. Some examples.

1. Our Mayor was the only Mayor in Canada to attend the Winter Mayors Conference on China. (Twice) and he will attend the one in Greenland 2 years from now. Are all the other Cities in Canada that could have attended stupid, by staying home, or are we out of line by spending this type of money.

2. The same thing applies to Tornio. How many Cities in BC are in Attendence and holding a meeting for 300 people. Try none for starters. Are the other Cities all crazy or are we. We have a team of 8 people there. After our official delegation from Vancouver this is probably the biggest delegation from BC.

3. Why would we pay $850,000.00 for a replay board at the Multiplex (CN Centre) can we really afford this, or do we do it because this Mayor wants it. Do you recall any taxpayers, or hockey fans asking for it.

4. Our Mayor gets paid $83000.00 per year. This is more that the City of Kamloops, and Kelowna and some other Citys that have significantly higher populations than PRince George. Why do we pay him more.

5. I dont mind being called a whiner or a complainer, however I notice that those people who are supposedly positive, and intelligent never answer any of these questions. Is it because they do not have any answers.

Its time for this town to come to grips with the overtaxing, overspending, and total lack of concern for taxpayers money. Our debt is more than Kamloops and Kelowna combined, and it appears there is no plan to trim it. Kamloops has a program in place to decrease debt.
So has a number of other Canadian Citys. Maybe its time we got on board.

Prince George has a strong tax base and that is the reason that this and other councils are hell bent to spend every cent they can get their hands on. Just because we can do it doesnt mean that we should. We could have the lowest taxes in BC and some of this money could be spent for facilities for seniors which would probably attract people to this town. As it is now, most are driven away.
Ed B.: "...useless moaning about potholes, trade visits, City Council decisions...

Frankly, I'm sick of that attitude and I'm sure a lot of others are too. "

Well, YOU may think it is useless!

Get with it, man! Why do you participate in something that you obviously consider to be beneath you dignity!

It doesn't make sense!

The moderator can censor me, but not you!

I detest potholes, mediocre mayors, useless business trips etc. and especially those who want to discourage me from expressing my opinions on Opinion250.

Maybe we need another site for those who are like the 3 monkeys: Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.
Pal, I agree with all your "whining." Asking questions like the ones you are asking are a vital aspect of participating in a democracy such as ours.

God knows what those in power would be doing if they still didn't have a bit of fear about wide spread criticism!

There is no recall of municipal elected officials, or is there?
Another paid holiday by the taxpayer who can't afford to even take a holiday themselves having to pay rising municipal taxes. What's wrong with this picture? I see they even had to buy fancy vests to wear. Must be nice abusing the tax dollar.
Ed:"I'm just saying the tiresome connect-the-dots from ANY civic spending (good or bad) to potholes is getting to me."

Too bad! I am getting tired of the bad shape of our roads and the very low priority of repairing them.
Part of my point is this.
If you didnt spend money on useless travelling, or replay boards, or high priced buildings for Tourism Prince George and the IPG offices. If you repaired the Cameron St. Bridge for $750,000.00 or less and saved 7/8 Million from being spent on a new bridge. If you trashed the idea of a New Police Station, New Museum, and New Performing Arts centre, this would go a long way to reducing our taxes and would leave Millions of dollars that could, and should be spent on Infrastructure, especially our roads. If the roads are repaired to a good standard, then you would end up with a lot less potholes. There is no glory in paving roads, and that is one reason why so little money is allotted to it. There could be major jobs created over the next 2/3 years if we really took road repair seriously.
Its interesting to note that the City of Richmond BC will be hosting the Olympic Speed Skating Venue. And has constructed a speed skating oval.

They will be sending a delegation to Torino to get information that they can use for the 2010 Olympics plus promote the City of Richmond.

They will be sending an 8 man Delegation. The Mayor, one Councillor, and 6 others. Cost will be in the area of $117,000.00.

Can we assume that in addition to the $38,000.00 that the City paid for our 7 man delegation that Initiatives Prince George will be footing the bill for the balance which would/or could be in the area of $80,000.00. If so this will give you a better idea what this little junket is costing taxpayers. Dont forget that IPG is funded by the taxpayers of Prince George.
>They (Richmond)will be sending an 8 man Delegation. The Mayor, one Councillor, and 6 others. Cost will be in the area of $117,000.00.<

These expenses or a major portion thereof will probably be covered by the provincial/federal budget for the 2010 Games.

Just a guess, though.
