On the left, the roundabout plan for 5th and Cassiar, while on the right, the  controlled intersection option.
Prince George, B.C. – The path is being paved to move towards two way traffic on 2nd and 4th Avenues in Prince George.

City Council has approved one of four options presented to it to achieve two way traffic flow in the downtown.

The selected option, would see roundabouts constructed at 5th and Cassiar and at 3rd and Vancouver. This option is a little more expensive than creating a controlled intersection, but, the Traffic engineers say a roundabout has a better impact of calming traffic, lower  crash rates and would cost less in the long run to maintain.

The installation of the two roundabouts will cost just under $2 million, while two  controlled intersections with traffic lights would cost about $1.7 million.

Councillor Brian Skakun says he could not support this project  as he doesn't beleive there is anyone in Prince George who even knows how to propertly use a roundabout "In my opinion they just back up traffic" says Skakun.  He says the $1.9 million would be better spent on road upgrades and filling potholes.

"We've been discussing this for a very long time" says Councillor Murry Krause who says  he believes this  project supports the Smart Growth  on the Ground project and he supports the move to two way traffic.

The project is not funded, but  is ready to go should funds become available.

What backs up traffic more? A constantly flowing roundabout or a traffic light that stops traffic for a determined amount of time?
Potholes its as simple as that.
whats wrong with one way streets? screw the round about, and put it into 2 million dollars worth of potholes.
Thats about enough of the logic talk gold_rush..!
Bang on gold_rush. Victoria years ago got rid of their roundabout, I believe it was on Douglas, as there were too many accidents.
Skakun should talk to the majority of people who work at PG Pulp or any other business down past the cutbanks. That roundabout is awesome and has done wonders for the traffic.

Skakun thinks he is the voice of the working class. He does not speak for me.
Like I said before, the city got rid of the two way traffic downtown because it was a problem. Why would they want to revert back to a problem?
I much prefer a roundabout to traffic lights; I think they do wonders for the flow of traffic if (and that's a big if) people know how to use them properly. Unfortunately, a lot of people in this town can't even do something as simple as signal when they get close to their exit.
People here need to learn how to merge before they can handle roundabouts...
I suspect that P.G. drivers are already getting used to roundabouts and that too many out-of-town drivers (who have never even seen one!) are baffled by them!

That shouldn't prevent P.G. from putting in more roundabouts, in fact the city should approach the province to convert the intersection of 16 and 97 as soon as possible!
4th ave. barely fits 3 lanes (with parking). Just take a guess what happens next.
I thought I would ad my comments about the roundabout issue discussed at council last night. The issue of traffic flow and calming of traffic are not needed downtown in my opinion. If any one wants to see how the traffic flows on PG Pulp Mill road in the late afternoon take a few minutes and have look. I have seen lines of vehicles a kilometre or better on a number of occasions because the westbound traffic cannot enter the traffic circle because the northbound traffic coming off the bridge is too steady and people will not for the most part allow vehicles from the east to enter the traffic circle. Has this round about helped traffic flow heading north from the Cameroan St Bridge? Yes it has but is has cause long delays for others entering the intersection. Perhaps people need to be educated on the roundabout and use some common sense especially at busy times.

I also did not support this at council last night because 5th ave will now go to one lane heading west and will cause traffic issues there as well and Third and Vancouver will not in my opinion help at all.
There is also the cost of 1.9 million dollars that has to be found to fund this and there is a good chance other much needed infrastructure projects will not proceed because of the roundabout and traffic changes down town. Council just authorised spending 50 -60 million dollars on the Winter games and new RCMP building and 1.9 million might not seem like a lot but it adds up and could be used for filling potholes to replacing sewer lines. Thats just my opinion.

YES the potholes really need fixing!!! Are you listening? City Streets Manager? They say the patching crews were out at the last thaw we had. Where, I wonder? I drive all over this town and didn't see ANY new patches anywhere, just MORE holes. So just where were the patching crews? Anybody see any working, anywhere?
To me this seems to be a 'problem' that doesn't need fixing. I think the current traffic flow is working fine.

However I have come across several out of towners over the years that have gotten lost trying to get from 5th ave downtown to 5th ave out of downtown. "Just drive over to 3rd Ave, turn left and you will end up being on 5th Ave. Trust me."

I am not suggesting any renaming of streets, I think it is kind of an interesting quirk of our city's history.
You said it all Brian. The mandarins at City Hall are just short of things to do so they dream up these strange ideas to keep them working at the tax payer expanse.. Just keep those guys awake and show them some common sense.
Cheers
ditto Retired 02, I agree and good post Brian.
Roundabout at 3rd and Vancouver?? Hardly seems like enough room for this construction, or, does our land baron city hall own property here (not according to the map of City owned properties in the City of Prince George 2011 Prospectus)? It seems that our bottomless bank (tax levies) account will need to purchase yet more privately held realestate for this venture. WHEN IS THIS EXTRA SPENDING AND INCREASES OF OUR TAX DOLLARS GOING TO END????? DAN ROGERS AND CRONIES AT CITY HALL DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND LEAVE OUR WALLETS ALONE!!!! AND SPEAKING OF OUR WALLETS.....WHO HIRED THE INDIVIDUAL TO 'PROMOTE' THE PROPOSED PERFORMING ARTS CENTER?
I agree too Brian, we just simply don`t need it. Sometimes I wish PG had the same sense of pride as Quesnel. For a small town, they know how to amplify their beauty.
Traffic circles and roundabouts can be a useful alternative to specific problems in the right places. But, what the heck is the rush here? As far as I am concerned the traffic moves fine now and we have lots of other higher priorities. Does someone at the City or one of their consultants have a hard on for these sorts of things even if we do not need them yet? Could be another boondoggle and waste of money like Boundary Road.
Roundabouts should have two lanes---duh! That thing on the Nechako was a good idea but there is no room there for the extra lane needed.

Take that stupid angle parking out of third ave before you do anything else to it. I know for a fact that causes a lot of accidents.
On second thought-- Let`s just let Dan go ahead with it. It will feed his own demise.
Hey, Brian. Have a talk with yer buddies at city hall and convince them to come on this site and have a yak with us great unwashed. I may revel in their wisdom. One way streets, two way streets, AND a roundabout still ain't gonna get me to go downtown. So there!
