Prince George, B.C. - He has been part of the Prince George Library for five years, but "Darth Slitherous" has announced he is retiring.
(At right, Chief Librarian Allan Wilson and "Darth")
Darth, also known as DS, is a common 112-cm (44-inch) corn snake. His glass home was on the first floor of the Bob Harkins branch in the children’s section, where he would recommend books for younger readers about animals that were unpopular because of their looks.
Chief Librarian, Allan Wilson says Darth was rescued from abuse and brought to the library in 2006. Although not necessarily loved by everyone who saw him, Darth did strike a chord with some younger readers, as he was often used as a way to break down stereotypes about snakes, and an inspiration for youth to learn more about snakes and other, not so popular creatures.
Darth’s library house was often filled with discarded books with holes cut through them and he would crawl in and out of the books, amusing children and their parents. Darth’s last day at work will be March 11. He hopes all of his friends from over the years will stop by to wish him the best in his well-earned retirement.
He will be spending the rest of his life at the home of Allan Wilson.
