Sampling for Formaldehyde Alone to Come to An End

Prince George, B.C.- After 15 different samples having been taken, the Ministry of the Environment says it is now confident that the formaldehyde readings recorded in the summer of 2008 were an error.

“We will soon be discontinuing sampling” says  Dean Cherkas, Regional Manager of the Environmental Protection Division Ministry of Environment. Cherkas says the Millar Addition residents and People’s Action Committee for Healthy Air agree with the Ministry of Environment that sufficient sampling has occurred (15 actual samples taken in 2010) to establish that the 2008 readings were in error and that the subsequent samples that were taken in 2010 have all shown either nil or results well below the provincial daily objective level.

Since last spring, the MoE has been carrying out special sampling during air quality advisories, that specific sampling process will come to an end. That doesn’t mean formaldehyde is off the Ministry of Environment’s radar “ As part of our on-going monitoring program we have incorporated Volatile Organic Compound(VOC)  sampling for the Millar Addition and have requested Water and Air Monitoring funding for an expanded VOC sampling for the coming fiscal year.”

Cherkas says to make sampling more immediate, neighbourhood residents were trained in February as to the methodology required by Environment Canada.   “Samples will be taken when and where the residents are smelling strong odours that also cause health effects” says Cherkas who adds the benefit of having neighbourhood residents collecting the samples is that the response time is reduced, and they will have the necessary equipment on-site.

So how should the letter read.

To all the industrial operations of our community which makes it possible for our community to survive with higher than average income, We the city and MoE need to apologies for the wrongful image of posing your company as wreckless polluters.

To all the tax paying citizens of Prince George, We apologize for our knee jerk reaction of hiring a " Air Fairy " in the aftermath of inaccurate reporting by special interest groups.

sincerely

You know, this is really a crock. Formaldehyde has been used as a preservative for centuries, but it really, and I mean really doesn't hurt you. I've been told it has carcinogenic compounds so everyone gets scared of it. My Dad has used it to get rid of blood poisoning and has taken it internally to rid himself of pneumonia, so don't tell me it's bad. He 101!
Doctors can't tell you to use it but it has it's place in medicine. The Air fairies are just that.
Hey Ben, want to interview my Dad on this issue? He's up for it.
These "air fairies" belong to the same group that believes fluoride to be good for us.
