Prince George, B.C.-  With concerns the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan may be leaking radiation, there have been suggestions that radiation could be carried across the Pacific.

B.C.’s Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Rich Coleman, says at this point there is no threat to B.C.

"Health Canada has advised us that at the present time the current radiological activity at a facility in Japan is expected to pose no health risk to British Columbians."

Coleman says the Federal Government through the Government Operations Centre,   is monitoring and assessing the situation at the Fukushima nuclear  plant in Japan following reports of an explosion, in order to assess
any potential risks to Canadians.

"Emergency officials in British Columbia remain in constant contact  with the federal government's operation centre which includes officials with Health Canada, the lead department responsible for  coordinating Canada's nuclear emergency response."

Bananas are radioactive. Most likely one would receive more radiation from eating a banana. Don't forget about the radiation in the fancy granite counter tops. Hard to get diminutive information from media hype.
Of course they say no risk. Why cause panic?

It does spread fast though.

That's some serious stuff, I've been watching whis whole japan nuclear situation all weekend and within 2 days it started with one nuclear plant to 3 plants that's causing great concern. Now Chernobyl was 1 plant well Japan there's 3 nuclear plants that's causing concern so that's 3 times a Chernobyl now doesn't that worry me...Hell Yeah!!!. You ask yourself how long can they flood those reactors before they start losing the fight, they are flooding 3 reactors with sea water and at some point they will cause a meltdown and that's scary stuff. Oh they say if it does cross the pacific what radiation that's been carried over with the jet stream won't be harmful..again HOLY CRAP yeah right. Using sea water is there last resort to cooling down those reactors which means we have very little time before all 3 will be in a full stage meltdown and it will hit the west coast within 10 days of the start of a meltdown and I think monday will be day 4. When that dreadfull day comes you won't be camping outside the doors of ticket master for tickets like the old days but camping outside the hospital for dire medical help..first come first saved. Now I looked into how many of these nuclear plants are spread out in north america and theres alot 70% of them on the east side of north america now imagine this solar storm Nasa is expecting in 2012 that could wipe out life as we know it which is everything that resolves around the need for electricity now this solarstorm hits earth and cause the loss of the electrical grid of north america theres all these Nuclear power plants 126 in all will lose power to there cooling systems like in japan majority of them theres no sea water to help cool them down so you think chernobyl or even japan is bad maybe 2012 is the end of the world cause nobody on this planet will survive unless your one of the lucky ones in a government underground bunker.
canuckfan1974 are you for real. There is hardly any relationship between the Chernobyl reactor and the Japanese ones. The Japanese reactors have a containment vessel Chernobyl does not, and even if there is a meltdown there willbe no explosion. The melting fuel rods will drip onto a floor of iron which will dilute the reaction and then flow down to the next level which contains boron which will further dilute the reacton. No explosion.

By the way the other half of Chernoble is still operating.
To coment on your saying "The melting fuel rods will drip onto a floor of iron which will dilute the reaction and then flow down to the next level which contains boron which will further dilute the reacton. No explosion" I'm not talking explosion but if a meltdown happens sure the melting will drip onto the floor it will cause radiation to expose and rise into the upper atmosphere and depends on the direction the wind blows and sorry to say hopefully towards china but if it travels across the ocean the jetstream will bring it right to us and that's a major concern. I guess your so confident nothing will happenn but the ones reporting it tell a diffrent story.

Hey don't sweat the small stuff. You can't worry about all the different ways to be given an unwanted dirt nap or you'd make yourself nuts. Hal Lindsey came out with a book in the 70's called the Late Great Planet Earth and laid out dozens of scenarios of impending Apocalypse and that was 30 some years ago—we could all fry tonight or go on for eons. Not much an individual can do about half of the scenarios. 2012 is another joke just like Y2K. Bring it on Donkey Kong!
We are eventually all going to Hell in a hand basket anyway, so buckle up and hang on for the ride. Wheeee!
LOL the other half of Chernobyl is still running.

It was decommissioned in 1999. But it will be hot for 10,000+ Years. The place near the reactor, Pripyat is uninhabitable. It's a 50,000 people ghost town.

If Japan's reactors blow the radio active censium will ride on the jetstream to B.C. within a day or two.

With respect to the spread of radioactive fallout via the jet stream, the total amount released by nuclear weapons testing during the 1950s and 1960s is apparently 100 to 1,000 times more than released by the Chernobyl explosion. And, it appears, that the Japanese explosions have generated even less radiation.

Then again, we all know that if it had not been for those nuclear tests that we would not have had to spend all that money on a cancer clinic here. ;-)
Coleman is correct. There is no threat to BC from the small amount of radiation released at the present time, but I am not so sure I would put all my faith in the Liberal spin doctors and what they tell us. Their track record as of late has not been stellar.
Check your oars, are they hitting the water
HIs statement that we are probably okay for now, may be correct, but now we have three reacors in trouble and two have had explosions....I start to wonder about the validity of that statement today....and yes the jet stream will spread radiation all over the world.....the only question is to what extent...and do we want any of it here?
Coleman has absolutely no medical training so not sure how he can be so sure we won't start glowing in the dark? Would love to know what qualifications he has to make the determination that there is nothing to worry about here....
Ok corrected that the other three reactors at chernoble are shut down but they did continue operation for a time.

There can be no comparison between the chernoble and Japanese reactors, the biggest difference is Chernoble had no containment vessel. The explosions are from hydrogen gas being released caused by the reaction in the containment vessel. The containment vessels are intact and even if there is a meltdown the containment vessel will stay intact.

The meltdown at Three M Island released to atmosphere rediation equal to a box of bananas. If worried about any radiation that may reach us stay away from the banana section at your local supermarket.

Here is an excellent source of information, the straight goods, not media headline hype.

"Would love to know what qualifications he has to make the determination that there is nothing to worry about here...."

Sometimes I wonder how people can make such nonesensical statements. HE IS NOT THE ONE TO MAKE THAT DETERMINATION!!! Ministers of the crown pass on information that has been provided to them by their staff who accee the information from those who DO have the qualifications.

If we had to rely on ministers being the researchers and having those kinds of qualifications we would grind to a halt very quickly.
Thanks for the link seamutt.

I love these comments on that site the best.

"Feel free to believe/disbelieve whatever we have written. There are no conspiracies, however if you need to, feel free to make some up. They are quite entertaining."

A man after my own heart. :-)

Gus: \for chernoybl, The resulting radioactive release was equivalent to ten Hiroshimas. In fact, since the Hiroshima bomb was air-burst--no part of the fireball touched the ground--the Chernobyl release polluted the countryside much more than ten Hiroshimas would have. Many people died from the explosion and even more from the effects of the radiation later. Still today, people are dying .
Anybody here know where to buy a geiger counter?;>)
)
The main thing we need to know about is radioactive idodine... that is the greatest danger and a very real one at that. What one needs to do is take non radioactive Potassium Iodide to plug up the thyroid, so the thyroid can not uptake anymore iodine and thus the radioactive iodine won't be able to be absorbed into the body. Its the difference between getting cancer and not getting cancer as per the Chernoble studies.

I ordered my Potassium Iodide last Saturday from K14U http://www.ki4u.com/... currently not taking orders from Canada now though... they were.. up to yesterday... but sent me a message today and my order has been pushed down the priority list for shipping... Americans first it seems now. They say they are backed up and don't know when they can release some to Canada.... anyways by the time you need some you won't be able to get any, so the sooner one orders it the better. I can almost guarantee you won't get any from the Canadian government through our emergency preparedness.

K14U also sells the geigers as well... would love to buy one, but too much money... a few hundred dollars.

Good web site on the situation...

Big concern is that the containment has been breached... anyone that tells you otherwise knows nothing. They have had elevated levels of radiation recorded and the only way they get that is with a breach... minor as it is its still a breach or they would have no readings at all. The hydrogen explosions have damaged the containment equipment and a core melt down is only a matter of time now... the implications will be as horrendous as the tidal wave itself.. and from what I read it very easily can reach Canada on the jet stream and come down in the rain. If it all happens at once its best because we could survive contamination with a short half life... if it drags out we could starve to death IMO. PG has very safe water so that will be good for us... not so good for the Lower Mainland though... they should have water backed up now before any potential contamination of their reservoir.

Time Will Tell
Sorry Eagleone taking iodine is for peace of mind only. The radio active censium clings to exposed flesh. If inhaled it attaches to the lung lining and explodes as it decomposes causing mutations and eventually cancer. The greater the exposure the quicker the demise.
You may be right, but I understand censium has a short half life that makes it hard to accumulate at great distances such as across the Pacific? I could be wrong...
Eagleone stay off jet planes, you will get the same amount of radiation, oh stay away from bananas also.

The problem now is people aren't thinking straight. They are buying up potasium Iodine and taking it when there isn't a reason to. Heck on CBC news they were saying people were selling 6.00 bottles for 110.00 on craigs list. A pharmasist was saying it not good for you to take for long than 5 days.

Yes censium does have a short half life compared to uranium. Censium 137's half life is 30 years.

The sheep in England have to still be tested today for radiation levels to see if they are fit for human consumption 25 years after Chernobyl.

You forgot to say stay away from Japan seamutt!
Completely irresponsible for the BC government to deliberately take away our choice to protect ourselves in the event we need to.Just because someone buys potassium iodine doesn't mean they will take it... its a precautionary thing to have around is all.

Look up Troy Michigan incident for proof it may be needed. The radioactive vapors or particles can get up into the upper atmosphere and then get deposited all at once in a single low pressure rain storm. In Troy they had mass radiological sickness from a nuclear test in Nevada 3-days earlier nearly 2000 miles away when it all came down in one location due to a rain storm.

Easily with the reactor workers now pulled out due to the fact they can't work anymore in the high radiation environment of the reactor area... this reactor is guaranteed to melt down without any workers on site anymore able to continue trying to cool the reactors... this is a category 7 melt down scenario now... this will see explosions that will put radioactive vapors in the jet stream... if we have a low over BC, then yes we are at a very real risk of localized concentrated contamination coming in with the rain.

When localized concentrated contamination does happen our government has failed us by allowing us all to believe the line from Tokyo that all is safe and thus not doing their duty as government to ensure we have sufficient supply online for EVERYONE to have a dose... IF REQUIRED. Completely irresponsibility on the part of our naive government... it makes me furious that my pharmacy says they have orders from the provincial government not to sell us this safety option... when the localized contamination does happen its going to be too late... apologize for their incompetence will mean nothing then....
As an aside, bananas "appeal" to me. Seriously folks, phone up the people at Apple and let them know there is a market for a "Geiger counter app" for the iPhone4.
