Cummins Pushing to Make A Difference

Prince George, B.C. – Former  Tory MP John Cummins says he is not concerned about the future of the provincial Liberals “I see the choice in BC  politics as being the Liberal and the NDP and that’s like having a choice between hospital food and airline food, neither is very good but it will keep you alive.”

Cummins is running for the leadership of the B.C. Conservatives. If he wins the nomination and gains some following, he could split the vote in the upcoming provincial election . In the past, when that has happened, the NDP have gained ground.

Speaking on the Meisner program on CFISFM this morning, Cummins says under the Campbell leadership, he saw a Cabinet that was like “ a bunch of trained seals” who only did what Campbell wanted, and he expects the same kind of action under the leadership of Christy Clark.

Cummins says one of his main tenets of the party if he is chosen as leader,  is that members must represent the best wishes of their constituents before taking the party line. “That’s the way I worked in Ottawa and I wouldn’t expect anyone working with me to do anything any differently.”

An MP in Ottawa for 18 years, Cummins served notice to the Harper government that he would not run again in the current election. Instead, he says he is working hard to establish a party in B.C. which will “Offer a better choice than tweedledee and tweedledum.”

As for splitting the vote, he says there is room for a third party because  48% of the eligible voters stayed home during the last provincial election.

And its gonna be Christi "Duramax" Clark that will out pull them all.
So I wonder what the difference is between BC Liberals and the Conservative Party. I would have to say they will likely be both right of center. in which it would be ideal time for Cummins to start up the engine. Thus in the event of a coalition government, guess what, he can flip flop his way thru to build the party.
I like what I see from Cummins so far... I like that he says this party will take no donations from corporations or unions. I also like that he still represents the intention of the original reform party (unlike Harper). This to me says this party will represent the working middle class who currently can't compete with unions and corporations for political representation... the question then remains will they be able to raise enough campaign contributions to make it all work?

One of the big disappointments of the BC 1st party concept is they didn't take the bold step John Cummins is proposing for the BC conservatives in not taking third party donations.

I see this as a potential true free enterprise party similar to the old socred coalition, and that would be a good thing for BC... a reason to vote. The BC liberals would be left as an advocacy group for the far right and their corporate masters, the ndp would be pushed further to the far left with their hostage taking government benefactors... and our traditional free enterprise economy would take its rightful place representing the middle class majority. That can only be good for BC's future if that was to happen.
I missed Mr. Cummins and Ben Miesner this morning, but what little I've read about Mr. Cummins, I would say he is the appropriate choice for B.C. He carries no extra baggage. He sounds genuine about putting the common person interest of the electorate.
Mr. Cummins is the politician who had the guts to stand up for all B.C. residents over an issue with the Fraser River fishery a few years ago. See letter attached.
He defied the party line (GOOD!) and angered the native indians
who felt that they were the only ones entitled to harvest fish (Someone has to stand up for basic priciples for ALL BC citizens, if we are ever to become equal)
This guy may be worth supporting.

NEWS RELEASE

Fisheries Injustice Continues

DELTA-"Commercial fisherman in BC have a right to be angry yet again
with the Liberal government over the failed management of the Fraser
River Salmon fishery this year," said John Cummins, M.P., Delta-Richmond
East.

This season for commercial fishermen on the Fraser River concludes today
with fisherman having fished a total of 39 hours over 3 days including
the 2 hour opening today.

This compares with 222 hours of commercial fishing for the Sto:lo Indian
band from the Port Mann Bridge to Sawmill Creek in the Fraser Canyon and
48 hours for the Tsawwassen/Musqueam bands fishing at the mouth of the
river.

The Musqueam had a 14 hour fishery on August 8th in which the Tsawwassen
may not have participated. Refer to the following table for native only
commercial fishing hours:

30-July 4-Aug 6-Aug 8-Aug
9-Aug Total
Port Mann-Sawmill - Sto:lo. 72 96 24 30
222
Tsawwassen & Musqueam 24 24 48
Musqueam only 14
14

These fisheries are only the tip of the iceberg. These bands have been
fishing in a bogus food, social and ceremonial fishery almost every
weekend since late March. Fish are caught in quantities far in excess
of food needs and routinely sold.

The Department is aware of these illegal sales and because it continues
to provide these fishing opportunities, can rightly be considered to be
complicit in this illegal activity.

The mismanagement of the Fraser River fishery costs the provincial
economy tens of millions of dollars each year. "It's high time Mr.
Campbell and Mr. Plant called their federal Liberal cousins to heel on
this matter," said John Cummins, M.P., Delta Richmond East.

Title: Re:Interesting Letter from John Cummins re Illegal Fishing

metalman.
geez...I thought the headline meant "Cummins Diesel!"
Could be an option for sure, I heard him on the show this morning he does sound caring but you never know in the long run.
It is time to break the American-style 2 party system in BC.
The BC Conservatives have not elected anyone since 1955. The are a party in name only. A number of them are actually liberals in disguise.

In any event if he can get them to rise from the dead, then I suppose that he will get a few votes. He has a long way to go and a short time to get there, because we will probably have a Provincial Election this year.

Keep in mind that this dude is 100% in favour of the HST so that in itself will cost him some votes.

It looks like we could have a 5 way split
ie; Liberals, NDP, BC 1st, Conservative, and Green.

At the very least we will have someone in addition to the Liberals and NDP to vote for. That in itself is a welcome relief.
The Cummins letter was written in 2004. Since then the Conservatives have been the Federal Government responsible for Fisheries.

Maybe someone could tell us if the Conservatives have solved the problems outlined in Cummins letter, or did he drop the ball once his Government was elected????
How can we say liberal and conservatives are the same? That's just dumb. The liberals under Gordon Campbell were only allowed to say what he allowed and that is exactly the same as WAC Bennett when we had Socreds in power. Cummins says that won't happen. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it. We have to get the liberals out regardless of who takes their place but please, please; not the NDP. I'd rather see Daffy Duck than the NDP. Lets vote a party "in" this time instead of someone "out".
"Cummins says under the Campbell leadership, he saw a Cabinet that was like “ a bunch of trained seals” who only did what Campbell wanted"

lol ..... and this from a fellow who is/was part of the so called Harper Government ... what a bloody hypocrite.

Clean up your own House first!! He can't, so he is abandoning it.
"As for splitting the vote, he says there is room for a third party because 48% of the eligible voters stayed home during the last provincial election."

And this guy has been in politics for how long? 18 years in Ottawa? Still hasn't learned a thing there. Backbencher? Ever a member of the cabinet? Does not look like it.

"Hey, only 48% of the voters came out. I can get 25% more to come out, vote BC Conservative, and I'll be the big cheese. It won't be the Harper Government, nor the Campbell Government. It'll be the Cummings Government - of the people, by the people, and for the people."

Only thing we have to figure out which people! Good luck on that one!

Other than his farewell to Parliament, the link shows his last words to Parliament.

I am not quite sure if he said anything.

Is he suggesting Richmond is not prepared for an earthquake? Are the dikes going to break? Is he calling for an inquiry on why nothing is being done? Does he know anything that he is willing to share about this matter?

Ah yes, I see the leadership qualities already!! LOL

from the above article in the Globe and Mail

"But Mr. Day warned Saturday that an ascendant B.C. Conservative Party would threaten the B.C. Liberals so he sharply rebuffed requests from the party to join their cause.

“I really do believe the one thing we do not need is to split the non-NDP, non-socialist vote in this province,” Mr. Day told CTV.

“Some people in [the B.C. Conservatives] approached me and the answer was a clear, `No.’ I don’t want to see the vote split.”

Mr. Day, who met with Ms. Clark a week ago in her first face-to-face talks with the federal government, said he had been a supporter of the B.C. Liberals. “They have had some tough challenges. I think they have done well in turning the economy around.”
-----------------------

I think Cummins is a closet NDP supporter. Day has it right. Then again, Day is astute enough to have been in Cabinet. Cummins does not display those kind of smarts.
