Prince George, B.C. – Former Tory MP John Cummins says he is not concerned about the future of the provincial Liberals “I see the choice in BC politics as being the Liberal and the NDP and that’s like having a choice between hospital food and airline food, neither is very good but it will keep you alive.”
Cummins is running for the leadership of the B.C. Conservatives. If he wins the nomination and gains some following, he could split the vote in the upcoming provincial election . In the past, when that has happened, the NDP have gained ground.
Speaking on the Meisner program on CFISFM this morning, Cummins says under the Campbell leadership, he saw a Cabinet that was like “ a bunch of trained seals” who only did what Campbell wanted, and he expects the same kind of action under the leadership of Christy Clark.
Cummins says one of his main tenets of the party if he is chosen as leader, is that members must represent the best wishes of their constituents before taking the party line. “That’s the way I worked in Ottawa and I wouldn’t expect anyone working with me to do anything any differently.”
An MP in Ottawa for 18 years, Cummins served notice to the Harper government that he would not run again in the current election. Instead, he says he is working hard to establish a party in B.C. which will “Offer a better choice than tweedledee and tweedledum.”
As for splitting the vote, he says there is room for a third party because 48% of the eligible voters stayed home during the last provincial election.
