Vehicles heading east  are being stopped at the intersection of Highway 16 at the old Cariboo highway and advised about the closure.

McBride, B.C. -  The McBride RCMP along with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and LPG Emergency Response Corp continue to monitor the propane tanker truck collision scene on Hwy 16 near Dome Creek, 3 km east of Slim Creek.  Hwy 16 remains closed in both directions with an evacuation zone of 1.5 kms being maintained.   Drivers planning to head east are being advised  that while there is a detour, it will add another 6 hours to their trip.

A single vehicle collision involving an eastbound propane tanker truck occurred on Hwy 16 at Dome Creek about 100 kms east of Prince George last night around 10:15.

The incident was reported by another commercial driver who reported that a B-train (two trailers) propane tanker, had flipped over and had gone over an embankment. The tanker caught fire as a result, however the driver and sole occupant of the truck was able to get out of the vehicle.

The 31 yr old Edson Alberta man suffered minor burns and non life threatening injuries and remains in hospital care.  One of the two propane tanks exploded last night, causing a fireball reportedly seen some 8 kms away.  The incident occurred in an unpopulated region and posed no further threat once the road closure perimeter was set.

The McBride RCMP re-attended the scene this morning and with the assistance of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure continues to monitor the site.  Investigators are unable to approach the truck as the second tank continues to “burn off”.

“LPG Emergency Response Corp, attended the scene and have provided their assessment of the situation.  LPG has a crew on stand by to assist further, essentially it is now a matter for the tanker contents to burn out. Once the fire is out, our collision analysts will attend in order to determine the cause of the collision.” stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.
