Prince George, B.C. – Thefts of trucks are on the rise in Prince George.

Tuesday morning, Prince George RCMP received calls about two pick up trucks that had been stolen. In both cases, the trucks were late 1990’s Dodge models and both were stolen from the driveway of the owners home, one on the 2800 block of Athlone Avenue and the other the 1200 block of Bednesti Crescent.

Police received a call back from one of the vehicle owners who advised that he had sighted his truck, being driven near 15th Avenue and Ospika.  RCMP immediately attended the area.  The stolen vehicle and driver were spotted a short time later.  The driver of the vehicle began to drive erratically at the sight of a police vehicle.  While fleeing the area, the driver of the stolen pick-up ran a stop sign and caused a minor collision between two other vehicles at the intersection of Pinewood Avenue and Ospika Boulevard.  No injuries were reported.

The driver of the vehicle continued to take dangerous action to avoid capture, including crossing three lanes of roadway in order to run directly towards a police officer in a fully marked police car.  The RCMP officers did not pursue in order to maximize public safety.

Police received a report of an erratic driver driving the wrong way down highway 16 near Ferry Avenue (11-7559).  Police believe this to be the stolen vehicle.  Within a short period of time, the stolen vehicle was located unoccupied in a parking lot near the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 16.  Officers at the scene identified the second stolen truck parked in the same lot and were able to determine through evidence that both vehicle thefts were associated to one another.

"In most instances, the people who steal vehicles have no regard for public safety or even their own safety.  Their only concern is not getting caught"  - Sgt. Al Steinhauser, Prince George RCMP Traffic Services

In the month of March, 36 vehicles have been stolen or attempted stolen within the Detachment area of the Prince George RCMP.  Of those 36, 23 have been either Dodge pick-up trucks (1995 to 2001) or Ford pick-up trucks (1992 to 2010) including the two above.

"These pick-up trucks are clearly being targeted by a small group of thieves in Prince George.  Although we are confident we have some of them in custody, there are others that have not yet been caught"  -  Sgt. Darren Oelke, Prince George RCMP Crime Reduction Team

The attached list of Dodge and Ford pick-up trucks outlines which truck, where it was stolen from and if it has been recovered, where it was recovered.  This list does not include the two trucks above.

Our useless judges treat this as a joke. Lets see how much of a joke it is to them if someone in their family is killed or injured. Court system is a joke.
I think that NOT chasing these scumbags is a mistake. They know that the police won't chase them,so what is the deterant? Sure, some innocent person might get hurt, but with these A-holes driving erratically and down the wrong way, makes me think--what is worse? They should be dealt with hard and fast.
It is wrong that criminals are not punished to the point of it being a deterent to future potential criminals. There use to be a day, if your busted and proven guilty of the crime, it was off to do some time in the crowbar hotel.

Now, we live in sissy world (Canada), where human rights come into our mind, and we are not allowed to treat these people like prisioners. If your busted and convicted of the crime, you should loose your freedom and civil rights. You behave like an animal, be expected to be treated like one.

How to solve the problem, Make prisons like prisons. Let the lowest bidder run it privately!

We need to get the politicians to help the judges, change the laws so that the judges have authority to punish the criminals. Only in severe cases, bring back the capital punishment.

Should Clifford Olsen be allowed back out. No, he should have been in jail for twenty years and then hung.
Quote, "there are others that have not yet been caught" Really? LOL
Can't chase them, taser or shoot them so why do we have police and judges, just to humour the odd person who gets a speeding ticket or parks illegally and decides to fight the charge....
You have it all wrong...these poor poor people must have had a bad growing up experience so they need to be loved...send them to the Hilton on the Hill...where they eat and sleep better than most of our seniors or single parents(who have a job)....give them 5 minutes a day of stacking wood...then give these poor babies a snack most kids would die for because they worked so hard....our system is a JOKE....send them into the middle of nowhere to cut swamp grass with the blackflies....
Seamutt, giterdun. hespoke, balboa, pgdriver, prov1:

Ditto.

I especially like the suggestion that the prison system be privatized, EXCELLENT!
Lowest bidder? of course.
Thin gruel and hard work for all thieves and drug dealers says I.
metalman.
too many pathetic Do gooders in this country and not enough dirty harry's.
No all it will take is for one of these creeps to kill the wrong person and the family to launch a massive lawsuit against the criminal and all the people involved with allowing the creep his/her freedom. The only thing the upper echelon of society and government understands is money, until you hit them their, nothing will happen.
Way back when,,,if someone stole my vehicle (horse) and was caught did they not hang them??
