Prince George, B.C. – Time is running out to register for a special Crime Prevention Symposium that will be held in Prince George on the 16th of April.

“This day long session had been in the planning long before the anti-gang summit was held last November” says Linda Parker, Community Policing Coordinator. She is referring to the two day summit held in Prince George that was aimed at bringing together the community to deal with increasing gang violence.

The symposium set for the 16th will have one session on gangs, but the day long event is designed to cover a broader scope of topics. Parker says the schedule includes workshops on victims services, staying one step ahead of the latest scams and frauds, crime prevention though environmental design,  restorative justice, peer support, and the latest on  Block Watch.

Parker says its hoped youth will want to take part in the event, although she realizes the $60.00 registration fee might be a little steep. “It is unfortunate that we have to pass along the costs, keep in mind this is hosted by the BC Crime Prevention Association so there is a cost to run the workshops, so unfortunately, that’s the cost.  If we do have some youth out there who have a serious interest in attending and simply can’t afford it, I would like to hear from them, there’s maybe something we can do for them.” Linda can be reached at the Prince George Community Policing office at 250-561-3319.

There are two special speakers lined up for the event. Keith Pattinson has been described as one of the most passionate, dynamic and humourous presenters in Canada. He will be talking about giving our children what they need to succeed in life.   The lunch hour speaker is Kristina Copeland who will be talking about how to reduce graffiti, beautify the community and provide meaningful opportunities for youth.

Registration for the event has to be submitted by  tomorrow.

It's great to see this meeting coming about.
But, hell's bells, $60.00???
What about students from High School thru to University who would attend, how bout retirees who also have to budget, the working stiff etc.?
Yes it costs money to put it together, but if the city and the province want community involvement there are lottery bucks to pay for this. I think it's ridiculous to have folks pay for something like this that affects everyone, not just the elite of the city who have no problem forking out $60.00!
I think Parker's head is in the clouds on this one. Don't get me wrong, she does a great and wonderful job, and I have a great deal of respect for folks in these positions.
