Prince George, B.C. - It has been 16-months since an inferno destroyed the Northern Thunderbird Air Hangar at the Prince George Airport...
Flames and smoke from the raging blaze back on December 19th of 2009 could be seen on the horizon from within the city. It was, at first, feared that 56-year-old Vernon Martin, who owned the hangar with his family, had perished in the fire. An intensive search of the site by a forensic anthropologist has since determined he was not there. Prince George RCMP are still seeking information on Martin's disappearance. Fire investigators have not been able to find a conclusive cause of the blaze.
After an extemely difficult time, the Martin family is beginning to move forward with their plans for the property - they will build a replacement, as per terms of their lease agreement with the Prince George Airport Authority and the insurance pay-out.
A building permit has been submitted to City Hall, the contractor, IDL Projects Inc., has moved some equipment on-site, and George Martin says it's hoped construction will begin just after the Easter weekend.
Martin says the 44-thousand square foot facility will be similar in size to the previous hangar and will be much the same type of structure, with some office space. He declined to comment on a dollar value for the project or how many people will be employed at the new hangar.
It's expected to be complete by November. Martin says he's just happy to get going on the project.
